Following Arnold Donald’s recent video about the importance of speaking up, you might be wondering what to Speak Up about, how to go about it, and what happens when you do.

Speak Up is about being open and honest, to have the courageous conversations we need to have to move forward and improve. So, what should we Speak Up about?

The simple answer is anything that doesn’t feel right, or you think we could be doing better. We should all feel empowered to Speak Up; not only about the serious issues that we have a duty to report, such as environmental violations, safety concerns or security risks, but also about the things that’ll help to improve our everyday ways of working.

Feel you’re tied up in processes and have a suggestion for how a task could be simplified and done better? Speak Up. Got some feedback for your colleagues? Speak Up. Want to share an idea that can help us all create a more inclusive culture? Speak Up.

Nothing is off limits. And by having open and honest conversations with each other, we can all make a positive impact to our culture, making Carnival UK a great place to work.

Surely someone else will Speak Up though?

Never assume this! Have you ever got frustrated because you could see something clearly and the person next to you couldn’t, despite you telling them exactly where it was? We all see and notice different things, so we can’t rely on somebody else seeing or hearing the same thing and speaking up.

Ok, so how do we Speak Up?

The first point of call should be your line manager or head of department. They are there to listen and learn, and appreciate you having the courage to Speak Up. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking to them, you can also Speak Up to:

  • The Ethics & Compliance Team via email at ethics@carnivalukgroup.com
  • The People Team shoreside or your Human Resources Manager on board
  • Carnival UK’s Operating Line Compliance Manager (OCLM) and Designated Person Ashore (DPA) for environmental or safety issues James Stride
  • The Hotline by phone on 0808 234 2727 (30003 onboard) or online

What happens next?

Whoever you choose to Speak Up to, you can be assured that they will always listen, learn and act, keeping you informed on what happens next – find out more about this here.

Will speaking up reflect badly on me?

Absolutely not! We know some people may not feel confident to Speak Up or have concerns about the consequences to them if they do, but we all need to feel safe and able to challenge or question when something doesn’t feel right, and to make suggestions when we think things could be done better. Retaliation or unfair treatment of any kind is not tolerated – read more on this and other common myths about speaking up here.

Respect & Protect each other: As well as feeling empowered to Speak Up ourselves, we all need to be aware and recognise when someone else is speaking up. Check out our guide on What to do when someone speaks up for more information.
