Our ships sail the world’s magnificent oceans and we’re committed to our responsibility to help preserve and protect our marine environment. As part of this, we’re supporting the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) with a series of UK coastal cleans.

Supporting our sustainability agenda and giving back to our local community, our latest coastal clean took place on 13 June at the beach and park at Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley Abbey. Run as a team building event for our Fleet Resourcing and Rotations colleagues, the team of 13 were joined by colleagues from our Sustainability team and representatives from Veolia.

In just a few hours, they cleared 60kg of rubbish, including some interesting items such as a large rubber mat, traffic cone base and a plastic shopping basket!

Here’s everything they found…

Material Items found Items per 100m
Plastic/Polystyrene 272 90.67
Metal 37 12.33
Glass 25 8.33
Paper/Cardboard 43 14.33
Wood (machined) 15 5.00
Rubber 9 3.00
Pollutants 7 2.33
Sanitary 13 4.33
Cloth 6 2.00
Pottery/Ceramics 1 0.33

.
The rubbish was then sorted at the Marchwood Energy Recovery Facility to be recycled or processed into energy, with data reported to the MCS to help drive further conservation activity.

Thanks to everyone who got involved. There’ll be more coastal cleans later in the year, so keep a look out here or get in touch with Richard Warne from our Sustainability Team to find out how to get involved.
