In early March shoreside leads from our People Training Compliance team visited our Centre for Simulator Maritime Training (CSMART) at Almere in the Netherlands. They met with colleagues key to it’s operation and observed a variety of different training courses in action. Here’s everything you should know about CSMART …

What is CSMART?

Opened in July 2009, CSMART is a world-class training centre for safety, sustainability and operational excellence in maritime operations. It features the most advanced simulator equipment, technology and instructional tools, to provide Carnival Corporation Deck and Technical Officers with a superior maritime training experience.

Every year Carnival UK sends over 800 Maritime Officers to take part in training there – in fact Queen Anne’s Deck and Technical team most recently attended the Facility to use the Queen Anne simulator experience.

This was the highest attended new build event that CSMART have ever done for any ship in the corporation to date, with 30 Deck and Technical Officers joining for the event.

In July 2016 Carnival Corporation expanded it’s CSMART facilities by adding Arison Maritime Centre, which features the CSMART Academy and CSMART Hotel. The centrepiece of the Arison Maritime Center is the state-of-the-art CSMART Academy, which features the most advanced bridge and engine room simulator technology and equipment, with sufficient space to complete annual training for 7,000 Deck and Engineering Officers. In 2018, CSMART Academy was recognized as the world’s first Center of Safety Excellence by DNV-GL, the world’s leading classification society and a recognized advisor for the maritime industry.

CSMART also has a Wellness Centre onsite so seafarers can receive the right medical certification to continue working onboard our ships. You can find out more about the CSMART facilities, here.

What’s the CSMART hotel like?

CSMART hotel was built on behalf of Carnival Corporation & Plc in 2016. Located next to the CSMART Academy all 176 rooms are equipped with comfortable beds, walk in shower, a desk, large HD SMART TV, as well amenities including a mini-refrigerator, safe, air-conditioning, hairdryer, spacious wardrobe and multiple plug points including a UK plug point. Complimentary Wi-Fi is also available in all rooms and public areas so Officers can stay in touch with friends & family during their visit.

The onsite restaurant offers a variety of healthy seasonal options which are prepared onsite using local suppliers. And self serve hot and cold drinks are also available.

The onsite bar provides Officers with a place to meet fellow trainees from across all nine brands in an informal setting. As well as the bar, there is also an onsite shop offering Dutch souvenirs and snacks, Amsterdam clothing and an assortment of local take-away products.

The hotel has an onsite gym offering state-of-the-art fitness equipment and if Officers would rather enjoy the great outdoors, there are lots of opportunities for outdoor cycling, running & hiking through the beautiful nature of Almere Duin.
