We’re delighted to announce that, thanks to your help, we’ve raised an incredible £12,000 for Monty’s Community Hub. This means we’ve raised 60% towards our ambitious £20,000 fundraising target!

Our Carnival UK Charity Partner

Every year, we proudly partner with a local charity, nominated by Carnival UK colleagues, so that we can work together and make a difference to the local community. Since May 2022, we’ve been working with Monty’s.

Who are Monty’s?

Monty’s is a creative community hub in the heart of Sholing, Southampton. You can find them on Montague Avenue – the road they’re named after!

What’s a community hub?

A community hub is where people get together and offer their skills, time, and energy to support local people and address local challenges.

What does Monty’s do?

Our donations directly support Monty’s to run their incredible services. Here are some of their main projects:

Monty’s Bike Hub

Monty’s run youth bike workshops, teaching young people from the local estate how to repair their own bikes as well as helping to refurbish and recycle bikes. They sell these bikes to the local community at affordable prices. As experienced cycle instructors, they teach people of all ages how to ride confidently, they host social rides for the community and they run bike maintenance training for adults.

They also support ‘Cycling Without Age’ – a movement to help elderly citizens remain an active part of the local community.

Monty’s Community Pantry

With rising energy costs having a significant impact on local families, the community pantry exists to reduce food waste while supporting families with affordable food. They divert food that is still good to eat but may be past its best before date or is surplus to requirements from supermarkets or restaurants. Every Thursday, Monty’s run a community lunch, offering freshly cooked food and a place for conversation and community.

Monty’s Building and Gardening

Monty’s help local people with a range of building and gardening needs, such as building fences, clearing gardens, putting up shelves and day to day garden maintenance. They support all kinds of people with all kinds of needs, whether someone is struggling with mobility, affordability or finding maintenance difficult.

Community activities

From their hub in Sholing, Monty’s also host a vast array of projects and activities, all aimed at connecting and empowering the local community. This ranges from cooking evenings, to youth and toddler clubs, to pilates, to Monty’s Majors – a coffee and chat for the young at heart – and so much more. The Hub really is a place for the whole community to meet up, make friends, learn, and share skills.

Pay-as-you-feel

Monty’s operate on a pay-as-you-feel basis. They ask people to give as much or little as they feel able to, with their donation helping to do more good things in the community. They also accept payment in time or skills.

“We’re so excited for the year ahead at Monty’s, which is already looking like it will be full of opportunities to deepen relationships with our local neighbours, reach more people and grow our support for the most vulnerable people here in Sholing.”
