This weekend a special delivery was made to Cunard’s Flagship, Queen Mary 2 in honour of Victory in Europe day, otherwise known as VE Day.
What is VE Day?
VE Day – or ‘Victory in Europe Day’ – marks the day towards the end of World War Two (WW2) when fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end. Tuesday 8 May, 1945, was an emotional day that millions of people had been waiting for. Many people were extremely happy that the fighting had stopped and there were big celebrations and street parties. But VE Day was also a moment of great sadness and reflection, as millions of people had lost their lives or loved ones in the conflict.
VE Day is a day to remember the bravery, suffering and endurance of those who lived through the War. We also remember the soldiers who fought in the war and those who lost their lives, otherwise known as Veterans. Organisations such as, The Veterans Charity ,often provide immediate support for Veterans who find themselves battling hardship and distress.
In support of The Veterans Charity, over 100 wreaths were delivered to the ship on Sunday, where they will embark on a special seven-night transatlantic journey to New York on behalf of the charity’s Routes of Remembrance campaign. The Routes of Remembrance campaign connects communities across the globe by sending wreaths and tributes on poignant journeys to honour and remember those who have given their lives in service.
Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, the former First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff hand-delivered the final wreath to the Master of Queen Mary 2, Captain Andrew Hall. The ceremonial handing over of the last wreath was marked by a soaring flyover of the historically important British fighter aircraft, The Hurricane. The flyover was a truly remarkable sound and sight saluting the occasion perfectly.
“It’s a tremendous honour to be able to support The Veterans Charity and raise awareness for those who have selflessly given their lives to protect so many. As we come together on VE Day it is a further reminder for all of us, that we should never forget the tremendous sacrifice that came before us.”
Captain Hall, QM2 Master, Cunard
