One thing I’m sure we can all agree on is that life is different than it used to be – even without a global pandemic. We’ve become a world of digitally connected people; and while technology makes life easier, it also makes us available 24/7.

Everything you need is at a touch of a button, from your friends, to shopping, to the latest viral TV show – and it can be overwhelming. More so than ever now. Add a global pandemic into the mix, and you can now also connect with your loved ones and colleagues, take part in virtual quizzes and even attempt a morning PE class, all without leaving the safety of your home, ship or cabin.

Whilst the benefits of being able to connect virtually is so important right now, of course this can also add to the general feeling of being overwhelmed.

While we all react differently to stressful situations, COVID-19 is the sole topic of conversation on our phones, TV screens and social media. It’s hard to escape.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. We’d like to share some things you can do to help you find calm during this time and be your own hero of safe and well.

  1. Watch this video (30 minutes) – Find out the science behind why we’re overwhelmed, why our brains are wired to be negative and learn some practical things you can do to take power over the things you can control right now.
  2. Take part in a guided mediation (10 minutes) from Headspace – why not try it out in your next work break? According to research from the University of California, people who meditate regularly and condition their body to relax on demand have lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
  3. And finally, while it’s important to stay connected, maybe decide on a specific time to check in with the news – and always be sure to stick to trusted sources, so you’re not taken in by the wrong information.
