At Carnival UK we’re a diverse bunch, we have a multitude of skills, knowledge, and experience between us. You told us that when thinking about your own development it helps to hear from others about how they’ve got to where they are today. We regularly share career stories from around the business to showcase development opportunities and provide inspiration.

Growing up in the Fiji Islands, Priscilla always had ambition to work in the Tourism industry. She studied Tourism at the University of the South Pacific and started her career working within the Resorts in Fiji. Moving to the UK in 2002 Priscilla worked within the Royal Logistics Corp camp, Buckley Barracks Wiltshire in a part time admin role whilst her husband was in the Military. She then secured a receptionist role with Hilton hotels and from there took advantage of their development opportunities to upskill and went on to secure the Front of Office Night Manager role. In 2022 Priscilla joined Carnival UK as a Partnership Helpdesk Advisor in the Contact Centre before taking on a secondment opportunity as Tech Administrator within the Maritime team. Today, Priscilla holds the role of Training Governance Advisor within the Learning team.

“I joined Carnival UK’s Contact Centre in June 2022 and as much as I loved the environment of the Contact Centre, I quickly saw an opportunity to further my knowledge outside of the Partnership team. In November, 2022 I joined the Maritime team on a secondment basis as Tech Administrator which gave me exposure to a completely different area of the business. It also allowed me to try something new whilst knowing I had my Partnership Helpdesk role to return to (which makes taking the leap feel a bit less scary).

What I’ve found since being here is that there is always someone who can advise or provide support when you’re not sure where to head next; you just need to be open to trying new things and willing to speak up and ask questions.

While bias (now being in the Learning team) I must also credit the development resources that are available at Carnival UK. Without the information available to me on The Insider and The Cove in particular, the journey certainly wouldn’t have been as smooth. I don’t know how well it’s known but as well as the internal resources on The Cove there are also links out to external platforms such as the Open University, GLADIS and Good Practice.

My absolute career highlight is securing the role I have today as, Training Governance Advisor. I love being able to support colleagues on their own career journey advising colleagues about development opportunities through My HR Portal, The Cove, GLADIS, The Insider, Power Hours or by directing them to their Line Manager to find out more about Apprenticeships, or to discuss development opportunities available in role.

By being present in the opportunities that come along on the journey we can learn and experience a lot more. Not every opportunity is linear. Yes there will be challenges, but allow your faith, actions and patience to get you to where you want to be.

Priscilla’s recommended resources:

Power Hour sessions – I cannot recommend Power Hours more! There are a huge variety of sessions on offer and all of them are just 60 minutes long. By far (I believe) the easiest way to commit to your learning journey in bitesize chunks. To book onto upcoming Power Hour sessions visit The Cove.

Microsoft 365 – Sometimes going back to basics can really help us simplify our day to day roles. My second recommendation is to make sure your Word, Excel and Outlook skills are tip top. You’ll find lots of training resources and workshops available here.

Thanks, Priscilla, for sharing your career story.
