Data, Risk and Privacy are all subjects that some people feel can be quite dry. Here in the Privacy Team we obviously think different, but don’t just take our word for it. Some of the worlds most famous actors and Directors have released many, many movies with these themes at the core of what they do.

So, for Data Protection Day we asked the Privacy Team to say a bit about themselves and recommend a favourite Movie that shows why they do what they love. Some of these can be very mature, so before checking out the trailers or the movie it’s always worth making sure you’re comfortable with what you’re about to see, some of these may have themes or language that could offend. Check the ratings before you go in.

Darren Hampton, Director, Privacy, Data Protection & Risk

Darren has been part of Carnival UK since 2015, is our Data Protection Officer for Carnival plc and leads the Privacy & Data Protection team, providing privacy guidance and direction across the business.

He has over 20 years’ experience with data protection and information security. Darren holds a number of privacy and information security qualifications and has been recognised as a Fellow of Information Privacy. He has contributed to a number of standards and publications, and speaks at conferences on these topics.

Darren is keen to empower everyone within Carnival UK to play their part in keeping our guests’ and employees’ data safe and secure, and encouraging a culture where we all can speak up to raise concerns and improvements about how we do this.

Wargames:  Released in 1983, starring Matthew Broderick, this was one of the most influential movies of all time in terms of its impact on Privacy legislation, not only was it a smash-hit but it directly led to the US Government creating an internet policy with the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1984 as well as Demon Dialling (one from  the olden days a hacking technique no longer used) and eventually part of the National Security Decision Directive (NSDD-145) a presidential directive on Cybersecurity.

Though not directly a Privacy movie, I would also like to quote Jurassic Park “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should” something to always bear in mind.

Sam Godfrey, Senior Manager, Privacy & Data Protection

Sam joined Carnival UK nearly seven years ago on a six-month contract within the Guest Relations team, and she has had a variety of roles within Contact Centre Operations before moving to Privacy & Data Protection in 2018.   In Sam’s current role, her key responsibilities include maintaining our privacy policies, ensuring our suppliers’ and partners’ contracts comply with data protection law, undertakes Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), and leads on our privacy incident and data breach investigations.

Enemy of the State:  Will Smith starred in this Blockbuster as a Lawyer who comes under threat by corrupt NSA Personnel. Back in 1998, the National Security Agency (NSA) weren’t well known but following Edward Snowden’s well publicised whistleblowing they’ve definitely become a bigger name. In this movie, the corrupt NSA use all the saved Data they have on Will Smiths character to track and try to catch their target, from satellite localisation and biometric tracking to defamation, it really lets you realise how much those with our data can do if our Data is not looked after correctly.

Siân Cardy, Executive, Privacy & Data Protection

Sian joined Carnival UK over six years ago; her first role was within the Guest Relations team dealing with guest correspondence addressed to the Senior Leadership Team. Sian moved to the Legal department as a Personal Assistant and Administrator on a 12 month secondment and was then offered the opportunity to join the Data Privacy team, where she has been for the last four years.  In Sian’s current role, some of her priorities are dealing with Information Rights requests from guests and colleagues. She also handles requests from authorities such as HM Revenue & Customs, the National Crime Agency, and police forces nationwide where information we hold could assist their investigations.

Black Mirror: “This popular television series on Netflix is made up of stand-alone episodes based on dystopian near-future societies utilising science fiction technology. Many episodes focus on the destructive advancement of technology with data privacy and surveillance being important reoccurring themes.

Series 3 ‘Shut up and Dance’ the technology used here is current- webcams, drones and tracking devices for mobile phones and cars. It shows how these tools, which many of us will use, can be used to invade the privacy of others- simple yet scary! After his laptop is infected by a virus, the protagonist is filmed over his webcam and blackmailed. He must either carry out orders which are violent and criminal in nature, delivered by an anonymous person via text message who tracks his every move, or risk having his intimate secrets exposed. Still think you’re paranoid having a webcam cover?

Katie Peterson, Manager, Data Risk

Katie has been at Carnival UK almost 11 years. She has worked in various areas and has gained experience in the Contact Centre, Guest Support area, Data Privacy, Data Governance and now Data Risk. She is enthusiastic about CUK systems, in particular their historic nature and the data that resides within them. Katie would love CUK’s data to be of more value and benefit to the business which is why she does what she does and now sits within the Data Risk Department, spotting risk is key so we can drive our projects and initiatives in the right direction from the start!

 I, Robot
Based on one of the Science Fiction Legend Isaac Asimovs short stories, and another movie starring Will Smith, this action film shows the potential dangers of mass gathering of data and how it could be used, as well as a lot of insight into artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential benefits and threats. As you can expect things don’t go well and by the end of this movie you’ll never look at Rhoomba (Robot Vacuum) the same way again!

Adam Lee, Manager, Privacy & Data Protection

Adam has recently joined the Privacy & Data Protection Team, coming from a consultancy background. He’s passionately enthusiastic about data and bit of a tech geek, so apart from guiding the business with his data protection skills, he also comes in handy helping with various techie questions.   He is responsible for leading our data protection training and awareness across ship and shore as well as maintaining our statutory registers and reviewing the data protection compliance of more than 12,000 different data sharing activities with our suppliers and partners.

The Great Hack
Cambridge Analytica, Information Warfare, Google, Facebook – I don’t know of any other movie that can teach people just how much your data matters and more importantly, what it can be used for. Data is world changing, The Great Hack lets you see how that data has been used to literally change governments. The Great Hack is somewhere between a Documentary and a Movie but it is incredibly entertaining and whenever friends and family ask me why I do what I do, it’s the first thing I recommend they watch. It’s well, well worth your time!
