Last week, millions of people around the world paused to look skyward as a solar eclipse transformed the daytime sky into an unforgettable spectacle. For many guests and crew at sea, the experience offered a unique perspective on one of nature’s most remarkable events, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Thank you to Ventura, Arcadia, Arvia and Queen Victoria for sharing a glimpse into how the eclipse was experienced on board…
For Ventura, close collaboration between ship and shore teams helped create a memorable occasion. Working together, they adjusted the ship’s departure from El Ferrol in north-west Spain to position Ventura within the path of maximum totality, giving guests the best possible chance to view the eclipse in clear conditions.
Sailing around 40 miles north, Ventura reached an area identified for its ideal viewing conditions and maintained position throughout the event, providing uninterrupted views from first contact through to totality. The onboard guest lecturer and astronomer guided guests through each stage via live commentary on the Bridge PA system, before pausing during totality so everyone could fully appreciate the spectacle overhead.
The occasion became a celebration at sea, with a deck barbecue, live music and a vibrant atmosphere bringing more than 2,500 guests together on deck. The experience was made possible through favourable weather and the strong collaboration of teams across the ship.

While the eclipse created unforgettable moments for our guests across the fleet, crew members also had the chance to pause, look up and experience the wonder for themselves.
On Arcadia, the celestial display provided a striking contrast against Iceland’s dramatic landscapes. Crew members stepped outside to watch as the moon gradually moved across the sun. As daylight faded and the atmosphere changed, conversations quietened and attention turned skyward, creating a moment of reflection amid the breathtaking scenery.
Meanwhile, on Arvia, off the coast of Spain, crew members came together on the crew deck to enjoy the rare event in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Music played throughout the gathering and more than 100 crew members representing departments across the ship took the opportunity to witness the phenomenon together. The gathering provided a chance to step away from day-to-day routines, enjoy some fresh air and share a remarkable experience together.

On Queen Victoria, crew members gathered on the basketball court on Deck 11 during the ship’s visit to Tarragona, Spain, to watch the eclipse unfold.
As the moon moved across the sun, daylight gradually dimmed, transforming the view around the ship. Music, photographs and conversation added to the sense of occasion, while the dramatic “ring of fire” effect created one of the day’s standout moments, leaving many with lasting memories of a rare shared experience at sea.

Viewing the eclipse safely
Across the fleet, teams took steps to ensure guests and crew could enjoy the eclipse safely. Protective glasses were provided on board and safety briefings were delivered ahead of the event, helping everyone understand how to view the eclipse correctly and protect their eyesight throughout the experience.
Shared moments, lasting memories
Together, these experiences highlight what makes life at sea so special. From bringing guests together to creating shared moments for crew, colleagues across the fleet helped turn a rare natural phenomenon into a memorable experience for everyone on board.
