Today marks the beginning of Diwali, one of the most vibrant festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs across the world. Often called the Festival of Lights, Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

Across ship and shore, many colleagues observe Diwali in unique and meaningful ways, including the sharing of sweets and donating to charity. It‘s a time for joy, reflection, and renewal, bringing families and communities together to celebrate shared traditions and values with festivities lasting up to five days.

According to Hindu tradition, Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama with his wife, Sita, to the kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. To celebrate his triumphant return, residents lit oil lamps along the streets and in their homes, which is why lighting lamps and candles is central to the festival.

Diwali is also said to mark the birth of Goddess Lakshmi. To honour the goddess of wealth, prosperity and fortune, devotees will clean, repair, decorate and light lamps in their homes to create a welcoming environment in hopes that Lakshmi will bless them with good fortune and prosperity in the coming year.

For Jains, Diwali signifies Lord Mahavira attaining nirvana (liberation), and Sikhs observe Bandi Chhor Divas, celebrating the release of Guru Hargobind and other prisoners from captivity.

Lighting up CSSI with the spirit of Diwali

At Carnival Support Services India (CSSI), the team who support us to recruit exceptional people for our ships, Diwali brings a sense of togetherness, joy, and cultural pride. Teams come together to adorn their spaces with vibrant decor, dress in traditional attire, and share stories, laughter, and sweets. Take a look at the video…

However it’s celebrated, the message of Diwali remains the same – a celebration of hope, renewal, and unity. It reminds us that even in the darkest times, light and goodness will always shine through. To everyone celebrating, we wish you a joyful and luminous Diwali!
