Berthed together on a recent call to the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Kitts, colleagues from Queen Mary 2 and Iona took the opportunity to get together for a fun basketball competition.
John White, HR Manager on Queen Mary 2, and Rishi Chadha, HR Manager on Iona, shared more…
“With both ships safely docked in port on a glorious sunny Saturday, it was the perfect backdrop for the games to begin. For the crew taking part it was a rare opportunity to meet up with old friends, make new ones and play some friendly competitive sport.
The opportunity gave some of the crew to take a break from their day duties and burn off some energy on the basketball court. Teams were gathered from the magnificent Queen Mary 2 and the iconic Iona to take on a fun filled friendly battle on the basketball court.
At noon, the Queen Mary 2 team gathered and were welcomed onboard Iona to make use of the fantastic sports court that Iona has to offer. Following the initial greetings of crew, meeting old friends and colleagues, it was time to don the sneakers and sports shirts for the first basketball battle between the ships and the brands of 2025.

What followed was a great afternoon of sportsmanship and spectators’ encouragement, with cheers and applause as the teams dashed, dodged and ducked their way around the court jumping and dunking resulting in some superb shots.
The mini tournament consisted of the best of three games resulting in a competition triumph for Iona, but the true triumph being crew unity.
Scores on the doors:
Game 1 – Queen Mary 2: 6 points vs. Iona: 15 Points
Game 2 – Queen Mary 2:13 points vs. Iona: 15 Points
Game 3 – Queen Mary 2: 8 Points vs. Iona: 15 Points
Scores aside, the afternoon was a huge success, and the team’s energy and enthusiasm for the sport and each other was amazing. A truly successful afternoon of sportsmanship all round. A big thanks to Iona’s HR Officer, Sarah Delooze, for hosting the afternoon.”
