We wanted to share some further updates and information on the in-person events that we’re planning for March. As we shared before Christmas, the purpose of these events is to support our ongoing transformation journey and help us all with the shift to our new agile ways of thinking and working. To support this thinking, we’ve given the events the name: NextWave Shipbuilding.
Please find below the slide that was shared at the recent town hall:

NextWave Shipbuilding Working Group

- Gemma Pullen
- Holger Vatter
- Lynsey Powell
- Martin Ralph
- Mel Salmon
- Rhian Cardon
- Sam Tilley
Attendance
You should all have received a placeholder invite for the event that you have been allocated to. If you haven’t already, please make sure that you accept the invite as soon as possible so we can confirm numbers.
The People Leads have worked together to ensure that we have a good representation of people from across our chapters / teams, geographical location and level within Corporate Shipbuilding at each event.
Travel & Logistics
All overseas travel, including flights and taxis, will be booked by the UK Travel Team. Once we have confirmed numbers for the event we will be in touch with further details.
Q&A
We know that this is the first time we’ve organised an event on this scale within Corporate Shipbuilding and appreciate you may have questions so please see the Q&As below. We’ll continue to add to this information so please check back regularly. If you have a question that isn’t covered, please speak to your manager in the first instance.
Event Information
Both events will be taking place at the De Vere Horsley Estate located close to London Heathrow.
We’re running two events; both will be similar in terms of format and content to ensure that everyone in Corporate Shipbuilding enjoys the same experience. The exact dates are as follows:
- 4/5 March – arrival on the 3 March for a dinner
- 11/12 March – arrival on the 10 March for a dinner
We want everyone to be comfortable during the events, so there is no specific dress code. We do recommend low heeled / flat shoes, particularly for the teambuilding activities we will be doing – these activities will take place inside but will involve moving around!
All hotel rooms will be available from 3pm for you to check in.
Please contact Rhian who will investigate the possibility of an early check in for you.
Yes, the hotel has a gym as well as a swimming pool, all of which are accessible to you as guests within the hotel.
No, we want you to be comfortable whilst you are at the events, so the dress code is smart casual, including jeans. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and we have set aside some time in the agenda for some optional outdoor walking activities. So, if you think you would like to take part then please ensure you bring a suitable coat and footwear.
No, there is nothing that we currently have planned that requires individuals to have their own laptops. The only exception to this is if you are involved in delivering any of the content during the events.
Travel Information
For anyone travelling from overseas, the travel team will be booking all of the flights and associated taxis and will be in touch with you directly with more details in the near future once we have confirmed attendees for each event.
For those of you travelling within the UK to attend an event, yes, in line with the Travel & Expenses Policy, you will be able to claim mileage to cover the journey to/from the event. We do encourage people to car share where possible.
Please note that fuel for a personal car should be purchased on a personal card as this is claimed by mileage rather than by cost. Any claims must be processed via expenses rather than company credit card.
Yes, we actively encourage those who wish to travel by car to the event to car share where possible. Please speak to your People Lead in the first instance who will be able to support you with this.
There are a couple of different ways that you can travel to the hotel as it has good road and rail connections. The cost of transport will be covered by the company (claimed back through iExpense / Barclaycard expenses) so please choose the one that is most suitable for you and arrange/coordinate yourself:
- By train – Horsley train station is a short taxi ride from the hotel with regular trains stopping. Journey times from Southampton Central vary between 1hr 30mins – 2hr30mins depending on the route / no. of changes involved.
We do encourage people to book train tickets in advance to ensure that the most cost-effective ticket is purchased.
Yes, we ask that individuals make their own travel arrangements to get them to / from the events. Please refer to the previous answer for the options available.
If you require any support in making travel arrangements to attend the event, please speak to your People Lead in the first instance.
Attendance
Wherever possible we ask that people attend the event they have been allocated as the People Leads have worked together to ensure that we have a good representation of people from across our chapters / teams, geographical location and level within Corporate Shipbuilding at each event.
If you have a specific reason as to why you are unable to attend the event you have been allocated, please contact Rhian Cardon as soon as possible who will look at the possibility of you joining the other event.
The main purpose of these events is to support our ongoing transformation journey and help us all with the shift to our new agile ways of thinking and working. We see the value that being co-located brings in how people interact and work together.
We would like to see everyone across Corporate Shipbuilding attend one event, if you feel you are unable to attend, then please speak to your manager in the first instance.
No, these events are in-person only and very much about the value that being co-located brings in how people interact and work together.
