Crew often tell us one of their favourite things about working at sea is visiting the amazing destinations that our ships travel to. We caught up with Florence Gutierrez, Deck Clerk onboard Iona to find out about her most recent adventures ashore in stunning Norway.
“There’s nowhere better than Norway for an off the beaten track adventure. While last in Hellesylt I took on the challenge of hiking Gapahuken and Ringdalseggene. These hikes are a challenge but very rewarding and time well spent away from the ship to see some of the most breath-taking scenery in the country.

The hike starts at Ringdalseter and follows a pretty stream up the mountain. The first part of the hike is relatively easy, but it gets gradually steeper as you get higher with several switchbacks along the way to help you out. These provide ideal moments to stop and catch your breath, sip some water and just take it all in as you’ll definitely be feeling the burn by the time you reach the top. After about an hour, you’ll reach the Gapahuken viewpoint and from here on a clear day you can see the Ringdal valley, the Svartisen glacier, and the mountains of the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park. The views are just spectacular.
If you’re feeling up to it you can continue on to the Ringdalseggene Summit. This is the highest point on the hike where the views from the top are even more amazing. The trail to the summit is steep and rocky, total elevation gain for the hike is about 800 meters, but it’s a great way to challenge yourself and experience the stunning scenery of Norway. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure, this is the hike for you”.
