One of the joys of sailing onboard our ships is being able to find shared interests with colleagues and friends from around the world, all with different views, customs and traditions.

We caught up with Joey Carrigan, Human Resources Officer onboard Iona to find out what our crew have been bonding over recently in the Norwegian Fjords…

“That unique sphere, perfect in shape being passed with sheer determination by the momentary owner to defend their team from advances… that’s right, football!

Scoring triumphant goals against the backdrop of beautiful Norway will be the talk of many mess conversations onboard Iona in the weeks to come. In that same mess, is where it all started between our Entertainment, Deck and Technical Officers. Their love for football sparking interest in a kick around at the local sports court in beautiful Hellesylt… this would soon become Iona’s biggest football game of all time.

The day itself arrived without sunshine, but the sheer determination for everyone to have a good kick around and to enjoy themselves outshone the weather. It was a nail-biting, edge-of-seat, will-we-make-it-back-in-time-for-all-on-board game between the teams. The Engineers leading 2-0 at half time, and the Entertainment team making a cheeky strong return after an inspiring and motivating exchange by Entertainment Host Archie. This was short-lived and outplayed by the mighty Engineers who took the glory with an striking end result of 4-3!

What a day! What a game! Both teams were drowning in the buzz and atmosphere, but the smiles outnumbered the out-of-breath red faces!

This football legacy may be in its infancy, but the entire squad are committed to continuing to use sport to form lifetime bonds whilst overcoming barriers.”

Well done Iona for discovering a common interest to bring people together! Want to share what you’ve been up to onboard recently? Email us at Internal.Comms@carnivalukgroup.com and we’ll share your story.
