The theme for this year’s International Men’s Health Week is ‘Men’s Health and the Internet’. Whilst there are clear benefits to being able to access health information online, the amount of time we spend on devices can be less beneficial.

As we head into the second half of the year and into an extremely busy period for many of us, we encourage everyone, regardless of gender, to make every effort where possible to have some downtime away from your laptop and/or phone. This can be for short bursts during your working day or making use of your annual leave to really recharge.

For those short bursts during the day, why not consider:

  • Walk & Talk – for those meetings where you aren’t presenting, why not pop your headphones on and dial in from your phone so you can listen whilst you walk.
  • Fresh Air – make time in your working day to get out in the fresh air, go for a short walk / run to help clear your head and reset.
  • Move Away from Your Screen – even if just for a few minutes, go and make yourself a coffee or better still get yourself a glass of water and stay hydrated!

We asked a few of the men in Corporate Shipbuilding, and the wider corporation, what they do to get some downtime away from work and their tech, here’s what they had to say:

“I personally love to spend time in the fresh air and nature, whether that’s in my garden and tending to the never-ending weeding and lawn mowing or taking my dogs for a walk in the forest. It really helps me to switch off and appreciate my surroundings beyond work.”
(Bo-Erik Blomqvist)

“To help me switch off from work one of the biggest advantages I find of working in the office is the cycle commute to and from. This gives me the time to have a clear head at both ends of the day to be in the right frame of mind for what comes next. Particularly with the good weather turning up, Sam has encouraged us, for meetings that can be done away from a desk, to take them on the phone and get some steps in or just be outside.”
(Scott Burnett)

“I have seven grandsons (age 8 and under) and love spending time with them when I can.  I am the president of my condo association and on the board of a small company.  I also follow closely US sports of football, baseball, and basketball.  I also like to cruise.”
(Bill Burke)
