On the 21 July 2022, CUK Maritime donned their active gear and headed to Calshot Activities Center for the day. The sun was shining, the sky was blue…it was a marvelous day, fully of jollities, catching up with each other and a chance to take a well-earned pause from the world of work. We asked Philippa Rayner, Consultant Designated Body and Revalidation (Health Services) to share her experience of the day…

As I drove nearer to Calshot I became more apprehensive about the day ahead. I am not physically very fit and was anxious about the activities and how the day was going to pan out. I was looking forward to the team events and ice breakers and generally spending time with colleagues away from an office environment  as I am very new to the CUK. Well, I need not have worried. It was a fabulous day from start to finish. There was an option to walk to the castle, so I joined that group. There were only 4 of us. As we assembled the guide, introduced himself and said he was from the activities

center and was a marine biologist and would we like a tour of the creek and the spit before visiting the castle. What a fantastic hour and a half that was. Jake’s knowledge of the creek and spit was immense. His enthusiasm was contagious. He took us round the education centre and showed us the tanks and their inhabitants that recreate the conditions of the creek and spit. We learnt about the unique features of the creek, it’s residents and vegetation. We picked up rocks from the spit and discovered the huge variety of creatures calling them home. This environmental extravaganza was then followed by an equally interesting visit to the castle to learn about the fascinating history of this historic monument . In the afternoon I tried the ringos. Who would have thought it could so much fun sliding down a slope in a big tyre. Everything about the day was thoroughly enjoyable from the welcome coffee through to an amazing buffet to the final meet up. There wasn’t anything not to like. A big thank you to everyone involved in organising the day.
