Whether you know it or not, you likely handle sensitive information every single day. Sensitive and confidential data comes in many forms, including information that may seem pretty harmless – like guest email addresses and phone numbers.

From customer information and employee data to intellectual property and trade secrets, it’s important to know what information is sensitive or confidential. It’s also critical to treat this data with care so it doesn’t slip into the wrong hands and create a major data dilemma. Here are some helpful guidelines for handling sensitive and confidential information.

Do:

  • Share files with authorised personnel, only through secure channels
  • Shred or delete all confidential and sensitive information no longer needed
  • Remove and lock up all confidential or sensitive data from your workstation before it leaves your control
  • Protect saved or printed confidential data in a locked cabinet or your secure file storage location

Don’t:

  • Discuss or share sensitive information with others without authorisation
  • Keep information no longer needed
  • Send confidential or sensitive information via email without encryption
  • Store confidential or sensitive files on public or unsecured network file servers
  • Throw confidential reports or sensitive information in the trash or recycle bins
