In April 2017 the Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP) was put in place across Carnival Corporation. Since then we made a commitment, not in the least through our Oceans Alive programme, to improve our systems, processes and culture when it comes to the environment. We’re working alongside our Court Appointed Monitor (CAM) to make sure these changes are happening.

As part of this commitment, the ECP is led by Operating Line Compliance Managers (OLCM), who, with their teams across the Corporation, are responsible ensuring we’re fully compliant with our ECP.

At Carnival UK, our OLCM function is divided into two:

Our OLCM Lead
James Stride, VP Governance is responsible for the end-to-end compliance with our ECP. As our OLCM James’ wider HESS and Governance team develop, implement and manage our HESS commitments.

Deputy OLCMs
The majority of the OLCM’s activities can be split into environmental operations and compliance, including both strategic and tactical activity.

Here at Carnival UK we have two Joint Deputy OLCMs:

Martyn Knight, Deputy Ethics and Compliance Officer
Martyn leads on delivering our Pause Priority Plan (PPP), which supports our ships in meeting ECP requirements during the operation pause and back into service. Martyn also leads on monitoring and reporting non-conformities and submitting the monthly OLCM checklist to the Corporate Compliance Manager (CCM).

Russell Hobbs, Director Environment and Safety
Russell’s prime responsibility is managing our Environment Management System (EMS) which allows Environment teams on board and on shore to identify and manage environmental aspects and impacts, supervise the environmental performance of our ships, and ensure compliance with environmental statutory requirements including best management practices and company environmental procedures. Most importantly, our dedicated ships’ officers and crew carry out our policies and procedures on board daily. Dave Smith, Environmental Manager, has day to day responsibility for environmental management and supporting our fleet of Environmental Officers.

Respecting and protecting the environment around us and in the communities we visit is at the core of what we do, which is why our Culture Essentials are playing an important role in helping us go above and beyond our ECP:

  • Speak Up when we see or hear something that doesn’t feel right.
  • To Listen and Learn from each other and our brands on things like best practice and developing new technologies.

A copy of our ECP plan can be found in the policy section of our Global HESS under POL-1010.
