Life is precious.
We caught up with Dave Francis, SECO who’s been finding ways to keep busy on board Queen Mary 2 during lockdown.

For me wellbeing is all about balance, keeping both mind and body active. I’ve been making the most of the gym, monitoring my steps to keep fit, and work has also kept me busy. In my down time I’ve been learning to play the piano (annoying my neighbours by pressing the right notes in the wrong order – although I do have headphones now!) and a couple of times a week take part in the 6pm book club.
My parents contracted Covid-19 a few months ago and this pandemic really hit home and made me realise just how precious life is. During times like these it’s so important we support one another so I’ve been taking the time to chat to my team and colleagues on board too.
During Operational Pause the ships company is much smaller so I’ve got to know my colleagues pretty well; we have become more of a family than ever before. We’re all working together to do jobs we wouldn’t typically do and pitching in where we can.
If I had one top tip for staying positive it would be keep talking to friends and colleagues. It’s so important we all continue to check in with others and maintain relationships even though we may not be able to see one another face to face.
My recommendations:
During lockdown I’ve been walking more than ever and have started listening to audio books to pass the time. The Audible app on my mobile phone is great. I’ve listened to some awesome books and hilarious podcasts whilst lapping the decks. I highly recommend the account of Colonel Archibald Gracie who was one of the Titanic survivors who survived on an upturned raft and tells of the heroism on that fateful night.
You just have to stay positive, keep the faith, I have no doubt things will get better soon, and I can’t wait to see our Guests walking back up the gangway for a new voyage.
Navigating change can be an incredibly stressful and unsettling time. If you’d like to find out more about how you can improve your wellbeing, go to The Insider homepage and select either ‘shore’ or ‘fleet’ from the main menu bar. From there select ‘your wellbeing’.
