[polldaddy poll=10739873 align=”right”]How we behave is as important as what we do – our Culture Essentials set the expectation around behaviours at Carnival UK. The key to meeting these expectations is recognising how we’re perceived by, and the impact we have, on others; known as Self-Mastery.
Self Mastery is a commitment to focusing on ourselves, objectively evaluating and managing our emotions, and aligning our behaviours with our values. It leads to higher levels of overall happiness, job satisfaction and better relationships with colleagues.
We often know how we want to be perceived or how we should best respond to different situations, but achieving that in reality doesn’t always come naturally… it takes practice, honesty and humility. Actively and regularly asking for feedback is one of the best ways of understanding your impact on others; something we don’t always find comfortable and could generally do more of to really support our growth.

Introducing Culture Essentials in Practice
Since we launched the Culture Essentials towards the end of last year, we’ve been shaping how to involve you in conversations about them. We’re excited to be rolling out a team activity called Culture Essentials In Practice to give you the opportunity to explore our values, in your teams.

The purpose of these sessions is to reflect on how we go about our business every day. You’ll be discussing what you love about how we work, as well as focusing on what gets in the way of you doing your best work and enjoying your job.
During the sessions you’ll learn more about the results from the Our World, Your Voice survey which ultimately shaped our new Culture Essentials. Some of you will soon be invited to take this survey again as we carry out a follow up with a random selection of people. The results are really important to us to know where we can improve and plan actions to get us there.
To get the best out of these sessions and to work out how to adapt and improve, we need them to be really honest and have open conversations. I’d encourage you to use the time to explore and express what you need from those around you, as well as how you can contribute to making our Carnival UK team one that we can all be super proud of.
Part of our commitment to culture change is to be as focused on our people as we are on what we deliver; a successful and smooth return to service depends on it. Finding time to do this will mean reassessing other priorities, some of which may seem more urgent. I’d just call out that, when things are challenging and uncertain, it’s more important than ever to focus on how we do things, and not just on the tasks that we need to achieve.
Please do take this time together, it will help you to support each other in teams to achieve your goals. If you lead people, you’ll know that a large part of your role is about creating the right environment for your people to succeed. This activity is designed for you to build on over time to help you achieve that.
You’ll be hearing more in the coming weeks about how to get involved.
