We’d love to be able to mark International Data Privacy day in our usual interactive style however, unfortunately like other events, it isn’t possible this year.

Instead we’re shining the spotlight on what data privacy is, the role you can play in keeping data safe and sharing some top tips along the way.

What is International Data Privacy Day?

International Data Privacy day is all about awareness. With enhanced digital communication comes an increased need to be data privacy savvy so we’re here to help you understand what data privacy is and why it’s so important.

What is data privacy?

Data privacy is all about how we collect, store, manage and share data, whether that be the data of others or our own.

Remote working

For the majority of shore based colleagues, we’re 10 months into working remotely which has added a new dimension to data security – colleagues seeing a snippet of your home life through a ‘Zoom window’, and your family seeing and hearing Carnival UK conversations. International Privacy Day is a great time to remind ourselves of some top tips for working securely and safely in a home working environment.

How do I stop unwanted marketing emails/post?
Easy! Tell the company that you withdraw consent for them to market to you. You can do this via the unsubscribe button in emails, usually near the bottom of the message. If it’s postal marketing, you can write, call or email the company, or if you have an online account with them, you can usually make changes to your account through your “personal details” or similar. The company has one month to remove you from their contactable database. If marketing continues you could make a complaint to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO), although we’d suggest giving the company a second and final opportunity to put things right before you do this.

How do I stop people sending me spam emails?
Unsubscribing as above will only work for reputable companies. If email is obviously spam, a scam or phishing (where criminals try to steal your information), responding in any way only confirms your email address works. You’ll get more, not less, email as a result and it could put your personal data at risk! Delete the email.

What do I do if I receive post that is not for me?
If the envelope is clearly addressed to another individual do not open the letter, instead pop it in a post box with “not known – return to sender” clearly marked on the envelope. If the envelope is branded you could also contact the company directly via phone or email to make them aware that the addressee doesn’t live at your address.

What can i do to be more data privacy savvy?

Please ensure that you complete your Data Protection e-learning courses when they expire (you’ll get an email to remind you about this) and remember to report all data related incidents, near misses or possible improvements (in confidence if needed) to the Privacy team.

If you have any questions or concerns email privacy@carnivalukgroup.com.
