It’s almost the end of October, and you know what that means…whether you’re a bit of a scaredy cat or you think Halloween’s fangtastic, did you know it actually originates from ancient Celtics who would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts?
Since then the holiday has evolved to include traditions such as apple bobbing, trick or treating and other ghoulish games, however as a result of Covid-19 this year things will be a little different.
While many usual Halloween traditions don’t scream Covid-19 safe that doesn’t mean your celebrations have to be frightfully dull. Here are our top tips on how to celebrate Halloween safely while making sure you and your family and friends can continue to have a spooktacular time.
1. Have a howling good time with family and friends
Organise games for everyone in your bubble. If you’d like to extend the invite to friends and family who aren’t with you, take your Halloween party to the web and try hosting a virtual event.
2. Bake some bone-tingling treats
Try your hand (or someone else’s) at creating some of your own tasty treats. Our personal favourites are these ghost brownies, or if you’re looking for something a little better for your blood try some silly apple bites – recipe below!
What you’ll need for silly apple bites!
- 2 green apples, each quartered
- Peanut butter
- 32 sunflower seeds
- 2–3 strawberries, sliced
- Icing sugar (+water to make icing)
- Black icing (for eyes)
- Cut the middles out of each quarter of the apple to create a mouth.
- Coat the inside of the mouth with a filling of peanut butter
- Place 4 sunflower seeds on the top of the mouth for the teeth.
- Place 1 sliced strawberry inside the mouth for the tongue.
- Add a drop of icing and finish with a black dot of icing for the eye.

3. Lift people’s’ spirits (with the gift of giving!)
Try trick or treating in reverse by dropping off pre-packed treats to your neighbours, family, friends and colleagues.
4. Watch a movie that screams Halloween
Whether you’re choosing a classic or something a bit more family friendly, there’s so many to choose from – we’ll let you fright it out!
5. Become a country pumpkin
Get into the holiday spirit by carving your own pumpkin! If you get the opportunity to pick your own we recommend the following local farms.
- Sunnyfields farm, Totton
- Pickwell farm, Southampton
- Rogate Pumpkin patch, Midhurst
- Cat and fiddle farm & cafe, New Forest (South)
- Sopley farm, New Forest (South)
- Pumpkin Pastures, Fordingbridge (North)
If your favourite pumpkin picking spot isn’t listed, recommend it to others by sharing details in the comments box below.
