Keeping colleagues safe and well continues to be our number one priority no matter where in the world they might be. At Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, we had colleagues supporting the final outfitting on Iona, but Government restrictions forced the temporary slowdown of work. As such, we’ve repatriated and relocated all our people that were based there.
One colleague, Efisio Piras, New Build Site and Guarantee Manager, saw his relocation as a great opportunity to be a hero of safe and well. To protect our colleagues, a supply of face masks had been delivered to the ship yard, but with all colleagues leaving the site, these were no longer needed.
Knowing that medical supplies were in high demand in Italy, where he’s originally from, Efisio sought approval from Carnival UK to re-purpose the face masks. Hiring a car, he drove himself and the face masks over 1,500 km to his home town of Olbia, Sardinia. On arrival, he placed himself in quarantine, and his brother, with the support of the John Paul II crisis unit, delivered a supply of face masks to Olbia’s hospital. Face masks were also donated to the local civil protection authorities.

Commenting on the donation and his current self-isolation situation, Efisio said:
I want to thank Carnival UK for enabling me to support those who fight on the front line every day against the virus: doctors, hospital staff and volunteers; the full community is grateful to Carnival UK for the donation. When i come out of self-isolation, I’m most looking forward to hugging my girlfriend Rosella and daughter Linda!
The thoughtful actions of Efisio and Carnival UK even made the local news! Read the full story here. (Enable translate on your search engine if it doesn’t do this automatically.)
