We’re thrilled to announce that Charlotte Rooney, one of our latest apprentices, has won the Star Apprentice in Team Leading at Havant & South Downs College.  Charlotte was recognised for her high standards of work and for proactively looking for ways to be better, both in her team and in herself. A huge congratulations!

Let’s hear more about Charlotte’s apprenticeship journey…

Charlotte Rooney
Senior Advisor, Health Services
Level 3 Management and Leadership

“I began my apprenticeship in May 2018 and as an aspiring manager, I couldn’t wait to start. When I delved into the modules, I could see they’d given me everything I’d need to set me on the path to becoming a great manager.

I’ve made the most of the opportunity, and the support I’ve had has been brilliant. From my manager, who has been a great role model, to my assessor who helped me think about things differently, to my Carnival colleagues who were so patient in letting me shadow their work. Part-way through my apprenticeship, my role changed and I took on other areas of responsibility which really helped me apply what I’ve learned.

I’m finishing my studies knowing what it means to be a great leader and with a confident approach to management. I’ve also recognised that my development doesn’t finish at the end of a qualification – it’s continuous and self-driven too!

For any colleagues looking to progress, I really recommend firstly being open with your manager about your career aspirations and secondly, to just put yourself out there. Whether that means reaching out to managers of other departments you’re interested in, or grabbing opportunities to work with different people to help you grow.

So what’s next for me? Well, while I love working in my current team, I’ve seen Carnival UK embrace a really inclusive culture; and I’d love to pursue a career in HR where I could play a more active role in this space.

I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to complete my qualification alongside my role at Carnival. I feel so motivated, and having ended my course with an award has just been the icing on the cake!”

Do you want to kick start your career in 2020 too?

As Charlotte mentions, development isn’t just about formal qualifications. Dedicating time to your Individual Development Plan (IDP) is one thing that can make the biggest difference to your career today. And you’ll be having your Enabling Conversation too, which is the perfect time to have that chat with your manager and review your goals for Q2, whether you want to level up in your career, or become the best you can be in your role today.

Head to The Cove and visit the ‘Learning Academy Welcome’ to find everything you need on creating your IDP.
