Back in March, after over 37 years at sea, Captain Sarah Breton announced her plan to retire in September, after what will be 30 years with Carnival Corporation. Her last trip was taking Oriana out of service on 12 August.

Over the past three decades, she’s served with five brands within Carnival Corporation: Princess Cruises, Ocean Village, P&O Australia, Fathom and latterly P&O Cruises.

Since the beginning of her career Captain Breton had her sights on becoming a Captain, which she achieved by becoming Carnival Corporation’s first female Captain when she took command of P&O Cruises’ Artemis in 2010 – a landmark and first in British history.

Speaking about her career, Captain Breton said: “I grew up around boats and it was when two next door neighbours spoke to me about their time at sea that I realised it was a career I wanted to pursue. I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in some new exciting changes in cruising over the years. One that will always hold a special place is when, during 2016 and 2017, as Captain of Adonia [Fathom], we took American’s back to Cuba for the first time by ship in so many years – I’ll never forget their stories and what it meant to them. It was a real privilege to be part of.”

As Captain Breton prepares to start the next chapter in her life, she reflects on the advice she offers anyone considering a career at sea: “Being at sea is a way of life not just a job. It’s great to be able to travel the world and be at sea but there are sacrifices to be made with regards to family and friends. It’s not for everyone but there are great experiences to be had.”

Thanking Captain Breton for leaving behind an incredible legacy, Josh Weinstein, said: “It’s been a true privilege to have Captain Breton as a leading light in Carnival for three decades. A huge thank you to her for the past 30 years. As she goes to put her feet up after 37 years at sea, Captain Breton leaves behind a legacy which we’re all extremely proud to be a part of. On behalf of everyone at Carnival, I wish you a long, happy and relaxing retirement.”

We hope you’ll join us in wishing Captain Breton all the best in her retirement!
