The Aurora crew have announced they are collecting jam jars on-board to give to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute every time it comes to call in Southampton.

On the recent Grand Voyage a Guest made the rather odd request of the Captain, asking if he could take some used jam jars home with him! When he asked why the Guest explained that they would be donated to a charity for them to be used at local events to collect spare change. The crew were even more excited to find out that the charity involved was the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI).

A very happy Guest…

Our Guest left very happy with several hundred jam jars. But, as the Aurora never does things by half, our Environmental officer started the process of seeing if the local Southampton RNLI station was interested in also joining in. With the help of Port Operations and the hard work of the dining room staff they were delighted to hand over nearly 1,500 jam jars in Southampton on 8 April to Roseanne Blaze, the local RNLI coordinator. The crew are hard at work eating toast and marmalade and scones with jam so they can donate even more in the future.

Aurora have confirmed they will be able to supply a garbage sack a month (approximately 1 cubic metre) and are looking to implement the initiative on a national scale.

A bit about the RNLI

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the largest charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways. Queen Elizabeth II is Patron. The RNLI is funded mostly by legacies and donations, and most of the members of its lifeboat crews are unpaid volunteers. Crews rescue, on average, 22 people a day. The Institution has saved some 140,000 lives since its foundation, at a cost of more than 600 lives lost in service.
