In November last year, Ocean Cruise Terminal temporarily shut its doors so work could begin on the first phase of the XL-ready programme, which will see it transformed to become the first dedicated LNG cruise terminal in the UK.

The newly modified terminal, which opened its doors on 22 March, boasts a specious lobby area, a new escalator and stairs to allow for the increased guest flow to the upper level, as well as an extension to the mezzanine floor to provide additional seating.

Carnival UK VP of Port and Shore Operations, Steven Young said, “Bigger ships introduce greater operational complexity and we are pleased to be working alongside ABP and our port community on this series of improvements and firsts to the terminal ahead of welcoming Iona in 2020.”

Work also has been done to ensure the quayside is ready for the new 5,200-Guest vessel, including the installation of new 150-ton bollards to support the berthing of Iona, as well as a new stores receiving area.

The second phase of the works will see the installation of two new air bridges which will be used by Guests to embark and disembark Iona next year.

The renovations are part of a project to ensure the Southampton terminal is ready for the new XL-class of ships, including the new additions to Carnival UK’s fleet over the next few years.
