What is Global Recycling Day? It first started in 2018 to help recognise and celebrate the importance recycling plays in protecting our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It’s a day for the world to come together and put the planet first, something we’re committed to through our Ocean’s Alive programme.
What’s happening on board?
Across Carnival Corporation plc we’re marking Global Recycling Day by renaming our fleet Garbage Rooms to Recycling Centres, a HESS Bright Idea suggestion.
To mark this renaming, we hosted a special ceremony on board Ventura, attended by Josh, Stein Kruse, Chief Executive Officer Carnival UK, and our colleague who suggested the Bright Idea, Tim Newman, Oceana Hotel Operations and Retail Manager. Find out more about the ceremony here.
We also ran a Recycled Art competition for our Recycling Centre colleagues to enter and we’ve picked a winner! Find out who and see the winning entry here.
What’s happening in Carnival House?
On Monday 18 March and for the rest of the week, there’s a number of ways you can help us support Global Recycling Day. Here’s how:
Bring in your ecobricks!
An ecobrick is a plastic bottle (we’re collecting all bottle sizes) packed to a set density with used, clean and dry plastic to achieve a building block that can be used over and over again. Ecobricks keep plastic out of the environment and are used to make modular furniture, garden spaces, walls and even full-scale buildings. Find out more about making ecobricks here.
Top tips for making an ecobrick:
- All plastic must be clean and dry
- Your finished ecobrick must be as hard a a brick! Test it by (carefully) standing on it
- The minimum bottle weight must be 0.33g/ml. That’s 83g for a 250ml bottle, 165g for a 500ml bottle, 330g for a 1l bottle and 660g for a 2l bottle
Our ecobrick collection has started in the Atrium and it’ll be running for a few weeks after Global Recycling Day so there’s plenty of time to start making your ecobrick! Why not have a team brick that you and your colleagues can all add to? Just remember the top tips above.
Save money at the Atrium Cafe
We encourage everyone to bring their reusable cups when buying a drink from the Atrium Cafe, whether this is your ‘prize’ cup from the Information Security challenge last week or your own from home. We also offer china cups for people ‘drinking in’ at the Atrium Cafe (to be returned to the kitchen hatch by the bottom of the Atrium stairs), and reusable cups are still available from the Atrium Cafe for a small donation to our charity partner Breast Cancer Haven.
To support the use of reusable cups, the price of your drink now no longer includes the cost of your takeaway cup, so if one is requested, you’ll be charged 10 pence. The cost of all drinks is remaining the same, but by highlighting the additional cost of the takeaway cup we’re hoping to encourage colleagues to think about reuse rather than single use.
Here’s how it works:
Previously:
Price for Tall Americano in takeaway cup – £1.72
Price for Tall Americano in reusable cup – £1.62 ( £1.72 minus 10 pence discount)
From Monday 18 March:
Price for Tall Americano in takeaway cup – £1.72 (£1.62 plus 10 pence takeaway cup charge)
Price for Tall Americano in reusable cup – £1.62
Remember there’s a sink in the microwave room at the foot of the Atrium stairs if you need to give your reusable cup a quick rinse or clean between drinks.
Against the clock recycling challenge
Thanks to everyone that came down to the Atrium to take the recycling challenge. Hopefully you learnt a few facts about recycling Carnival House – like you can’t recycle the takeaway hot drink cups!
Christina Hannon was our champion, correctly sorting the most items in the fastest time. She took home some lovely sustainable goodies!

Repurpose an unloved cup and glass
You’ll have noticed that a LOT of cups and glasses appeared in your kitchen areas! They were cast-offs from colleagues, and after a good clean, we’ve repurposed these for you to use in the hot drink vending machines and at the zip taps. Using your own cups and glasses will help us reduce our waste of single use cups.
There’s some delightfully designed cups available so if you’re a fan of kittens or merchandised mugs, take your pick from the wooden create in your kitchen area!
Why not take a couple for visitors to use when they’re in Carnival House?
TerraCycle recycling
TerraCycle recycles the ‘non-recyclable’, collecting and recycling almost any form of waste. We’re supporting one of their Southamption partners – Kicks Count – to collect milk carton lids and crisp packets, two items that we don’t currently recycle in Carnival House (Hint alert for the recycling challenge!)
Throughout the week use the boxes in the kitchen areas to collect and recycle these two items.
Think before you print
Could you go paperless for a day? Could you go paperless for a week? Could you go paperless for a month? Last year Carnival House printed the equivalent of 278 trees. We know that sometimes it’s essential to have a hard copy of a particular document, but let’s challenge ourselves to find opportunities where we don’t need to print.
Did you know?
In Carnival House there’s lots of things that we already do to support recycling and a sustainable future. Did you know you can recycle batteries in the Post Room or by IT on floor 4? Did you know our Atrium Cafe takeaway food cartons are biodegradable?
Look out for lots of fun facts and top recycling tips all across Carnival House.
Small changes can have a big impact – if every single person in the world chose a reusable cup over a single use cup, just once, that’s 7 billion less single use items in the world!

Ive seen posters around Carnival House about what is biodegradeable and recycleable. One poster says the takeaway boxes from the atrium are, but I doubt the plastic salad boxes are? Can someone confirm if they are, and if not, whether theres a plan to change this single use packaging to something greener?
Thanks,
Hi Jo
Facilities have confirmed that the plastic salad boxes can be recycled 🙂 They are going to put a note beside them to make everyone aware.
