Frequently asked questions – updated 13/09/2023
*NEW* What happens if I’m booked onto a session that is cancelled or rescheduled?
If you are booked onto a Leadership & Management Essentials workshop in October or November 2023 then you will be contacted by the Learning Team and they will support with booking you onto a new session.
If you are booked onto a session from December 2023 onwards you will receive a notification from The Cove. When you receive this, please log into The Cove and re-book an alternative date.
*NEW* I haven’t been invited to book onto any of the Leadership and Management Essentials sessions, what do I do?
You will be invited to book onto the workshops for Leadership & Management Essentials by your manager in due course, if you have any further questions about or to talk about how you can support your development in the meantime then please contact your manager.
I’m not a new starter but I’ve been instructed to complete elearning within four weeks. Is this right?
We’re aware that there was an error in the GLADIS email regarding your requirement to complete eLearning. We’d like to confirm that there is no four week deadline – you’ll need to complete all content by December 2024.
You will still receive reminders from GLADIS as these emails are automated. The elearning links to our two half day workshops, ‘Manager Welcome’ and ’Our Carnival UK Processes’. We highly recommend that you complete the elearning before attending these workshops. If you’d prefer to complete them sooner, then please do, so you can benefit from the great knowledge and information they include.
How do I sign up to the workshops?
- Once you’ve logged into The Cove, select the ‘Content Library’ tab on the left hand side of the home page. From here you can then select the ‘Leadership and Management Essentials’ icon
- Select the category relevant to your CUK level and role, and select ‘Enroll’
- Click the title of the workshop you’d like to book (please attend Self Mastery before any other full day workshop). All sessions available to book are marked with a green circle. Select ‘Self Enrol’ on the right hand side of the workshop you’d like to book
- You will receive an email invitation from the Learning Team. Please book the time out in your diary until then.
What happens if there aren’t enough attendees on my session and it gets cancelled?
To run the Leadership & Management Essentials workshops we require six attendees. This is to ensure everyone’s time is used effectively and learners get the most value out of the workshop.
It’s really important that you inform the Learning team if you are unable to attend. If there are not enough delegates on the day, the workshop won’t run and you’ll be rebooked onto another session. If a session you are on is cancelled before the day of the workshop, you will be emailed with dates of the next workshops for you to choose from.
Once I’ve attended Inclusive Leadership, do I still need to attend Inclusive Recruitment?
There is a section within Inclusive Leadership dedicated to inclusivity throughout the recruitment process, therefore, once you have attended Inclusive Leadership you will not need to attend Inclusive Recruitment. However, this workshop does contain other content about being an inclusive leader.
You will need to have attended Inclusive Recruitment or Inclusive Leadership before you recruit.
I have noticed that some of the titles used in the content are familiar, is this new content or something we have seen before?
You may recognise some of the titles of the workshops, this is to link to our core themes and skills to support our leaders and managers. The content of all the workshops is new and created specifically for this program.
I have a CUK 9 employee who is not a line manager but a high achiever looking to move into management, this would be ideal for them. Can they book on to the programme?
Whist we understand the program is great development for our colleagues wanting to move into a manager or line manager role, the current priority is for our CUK 7-10 Line Managers and CUK 7-8 Non Managers.
As we review the programme and completion numbers later in the year, we will re assess this and look at opportunities to open the programme up to other employees.
In the meantime, we would recommend them that they attend the regular Power Hours, use resources on The Cove and there are lots of development materials on Good Practice.
Do I have to do Self-Mastery as the first full day workshop?
Self-Mastery should be the first full day workshop you complete in the Leadership and Management Essentials Program.
Self-Mastery covers how you lead by example and we explore your communication and leadership styles and it is the foundation for all other modules. The program was designed to start with Self-Mastery and the remaining workshops were developed around it. It sets you up for success and discusses key elements that run through the remaining workshops.
Can I complete all the workshops as soon as possible?
We understand it’s tempting to get all of the programme completed as soon as possible, however we do recommend that you have some time for reflection between the workshops. This way you can really start to embed everything you have learnt and create great new habits based on your new skills.
I have a team member who is a CUK8 and not a manager. Do they still need to complete the programme?
All CUK 7-8 roles are being asked to complete Self-Mastery, Inclusive Leadership and Effective Coaching and Feedback. These workshops will support you to build knowledge, skills and behaviours to help you to deliver the work you manage and work effectively with your colleagues.
The workshops will set you up for success and help you better understand the Culture Essentials and expectations of Carnival UK.
Do I need to attend the workshops in order?
We recommend that you attend Self Mastery as your first workshop. This will set you up well for the remaining workshop which you can attend in any order.
How long do I have to complete the programme of learning?
New managers: You will have some elements to complete within your first four weeks and three months. You will then have six months to complete the level one.
Existing managers: Existing managers who align to Level One of our framework will need to attend this learning. Please check with your Line Manager for the timescales for you to complete.
How do I book?
If you are required to complete eLearning this will be assigned to you via GLADIS and you’ll be sent an email. For all workshops you can book these via The Cove.
Will I get a reminder to attend these training sessions?
Once you have booked your session, you will receive a calendar invite. This will help you plan your time and prepare for the workshops.
Do the sessions have pre and post work activities?
Each module has a short five minute pre-work questionnaire to help us establish your starting point for each of the topics covered. We have also designed each workshop to give you practical tools and activities that you can you take away and use with your teams and colleagues straightaway.
Can I attend the workshops virtually?
Due to the interactive nature of the content, all sessions will be face to face in Carnival House.
Do I have to be a Line Manager to attend this learning?
Not necessarily. Managers who don’t have direct reports will be required to attend three of the workshops as part of their development. These will be workshop 1 – Self-mastery, workshop 2 – Inclusive Leadership and workshop 3 – Effective Coaching and Feedback.
I’m a permanent home worker with my contract stating I do not need to come to Carnival House for work each week. Will you pay me mileage to attend the office for these workshops?
Yes, if your contract states you are a 100% remote worker, you can claim mileage or travel expenses to attend Carnival House in the usual way. Please refer to the Expenses policy on how to do this.
What if I am working on other development, do I have to do this learning?
If you are currently enrolled on other development, please have a conversation with your Line Manager to discuss timeframes around this and when is best for you to attend the Leadership and Management Essentials Programme. There is an expectation that all managers will complete this programme.
I have been a Line Manager for a number of years at Carnival UK – What additional information will I learn?
We want to support you to be the best you can be, both in your current role and in preparing for the next step in your career. Through driving your own development, you can demonstrate how you are living our Culture Essentials and empower yourself and those around you.
There are always opportunities to develop skills and reflect on your own personal development and how you support your teams to deliver and grow. Our sessions are packed full of useful tools and activities that you can use to maintain the motivation and engagement of your team. Our programme of learning also includes the most up to date information on our processes and policies, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for you to brush up your skills and share your knowledge with less experienced colleagues.
What will happen once I have completed the programme?
As a business, we want to celebrate and recognise this personal achievement with you. On completion of the programme, we’ll be in touch to let you know how we plan to do this.
Through regular development discussions you’ll identify what you need to support you as your career grows, placing you in the best position to take your next step when ready.
I’m the Line Manager of someone who will be attending this programme, what can I do to support them?
You play an important role in supporting your team member. You can do this by having a development conversation with them using the ‘manager talking points’ document as a guide. Please encourage them to sign up to sessions and support them to prioritise attendance. We’ll send you a ‘Manager Support Guide’ before each workshop, summarising the content and some questions you can discuss during your 121s to help them embed their learning.
I’m a manager in the business but I don’t currently line manage anyone, what do I need to complete and why am I being asked to do this?
As a manager within our business, you have a responsibility to build leadership and management skills and behaviours to support you to manage your work. As a CUK manager without line manager responsibilities, you will be required to attend three of the workshops. These are Self-Mastery, Inclusive Leadership and Effective Coaching and Feedback. You are not required to attend the other workshops as these focus on line management of individuals and teams.
What’s the difference between the Line Manager Induction and the Leadership and Management Essentials Level One content?
The Line Manager Induction includes six eLearning modules and two half day workshops focused on building your knowledge and understanding our Carnival UK people policies and processes. They are focused on equipping line managers at all levels to follow the processes required to support those they manage.
Leadership & Management Essentials Level One includes five, 1 day workshops focussed on five core skills and behaviour themes to help you build your skills and explore tools and techniques to support you to be a great leader and manager. Some of these subjects include communication skills, leadership types, building your resilience and how to create a high performing team.
Who can I speak to if I need further support?
Please speak to your Line Manager or get in touch with the Learning Team (learning@carnivalukgroup.com)
