On 19 November each year, International Men’s Day celebrates the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities.

So why have International Men’s Day (IMD)?
The idea is to promote male role models, increase awareness of men’s mental and physical health issues, improve gender equality and highlight discrimination. Or simply to get people to show some appreciation for the men in their life.

The purpose of marking IMD can be summarised in these repeating themes:

  • Making a positive difference to the wellbeing and lives of men and boys
  • Raising awareness and/or funds for charities supporting men and boys’ wellbeing
  • Promoting a positive conversation about men, manhood and masculinity

The theme for 2024 is Positive Male Role Models.
While children’s first role models are usually their parents, by the time they become teenagers, other figures start to emerge as people of influence. These can be teachers, peers, ordinary people in your community, as well as celebrities, athletes and leaders. It’s important to remember:

  • Emphasise and exhibit positive qualities
  • Practice what you preach
  • Treat others as you’d like them to treat you

Boys are more likely to adopt a role model of the same gender, and the influence of that role model can affect young males’ thoughts, feelings, actions and attitudes as they try to imitate or adopt their behaviour.

Anyone with something positive to offer to other men, be it advice or life skills, can be categorized as a role model, here are the main qualities:

  • Genuinely care about young people
  • Emphasise and reward people’s best efforts
  • Give your best effort
  • Take a genuine interest in others
