Today marks International Men’s Day, celebrated worldwide on 19 November to help break down the stigma and stereotypes that surround men’s mental and physical health, societal expectations and lack of positive role models. It’s about removing the fear and perception that asking for help makes you “weak” and that men should “toughen up” or “get on with it”. It’s about creating a space where everyone can feel safe to ask for, and get, the help they need.

Why this is so important

  • 1 in 3 men have been victims of domestic violence.
  • According to the World Health Organization, men are more likely to die prematurely from preventable diseases, with life expectancy for men being approximately 5 years shorter than women worldwide.
  • Data from the World Health Organization also shows that men are less likely to seek help for mental health issues, leading to higher rates of suicide with men accounting for 75% of all suicides globally. To put it into perspective, that’s one man dying by suicide every minute.
  • Cancer also disproportionately impacts men, with prostate and testicular cancers being the most common, yet awareness and early detection efforts are still lacking.

How can you help

Encourage open conversations about mental health, challenge stereotypes that discourage men from expressing emotions and promote access to healthcare services whether this be with your colleagues, your team members or your loved ones. Small actions, such as checking in and sharing resources about men’s health can make a significant difference.
