Every year on 24 September, South African Heritage Day honours the vibrant cultures and traditions that make South Africa so unique. With many colleagues across ship and shore proudly sharing South African heritage, it’s the perfect opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate together.

A day rooted in history

Originally commemorated as Shaka Day, in honour of the legendary Zulu leader King Shaka Zulu, the holiday evolved into Heritage Day following South Africa’s democratic transition. The change was a deliberate move to create a day that celebrates all cultures and communities, acknowledging the country’s complex past while embracing its multicultural present.

Did you know?

  • South African Heritage Day is also known as Braai Day – a celebration of community and culture through the tradition of grilling meat over wood or charcoal.
  • South Africa is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, home to communities such as the Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, Ndebele, Afrikaner, and Indian South Africans.
  • The country has 12 official languages, including Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, Sotho, and English – each helping preserve cultural identity and regional dialects.
  • You can learn more about your South African colleagues’ cultural values by checking out our Nationality Factsheets.
Whether you’re celebrating today or just want to learn something new, we wish you a Happy South African Heritage Day!

  1. Which Ship Celebrated South African Heritage Day . Queen Elizabeth does not celebrate anything African not even our Independence days just like they do the Indian and Philippines one . This should really be looked into in this INCLUSIVE MONTH .

Thank you for your feedback. We’ve passed your comments onto the Welfare Officer on board to look into for future celebrations 🙂

    • Very true, I was on Azura, apart from India and Philippines, no other nationals are celebrated. In fact, Africans are not factored in anything. Food is also India and Philippines. Very disappointing.
