Today is International Non-Binary People’s Day – a time dedicated to honouring non-binary individuals and highlighting the importance of inclusion and belonging.
Non-binary people – those who do not identify exclusively as male or female – represent a significant and vibrant part of our global community. Their identities challenge traditional gender binaries, encouraging society to embrace a broader, more inclusive understanding of gender. Recognition is crucial because it signifies a step toward acceptance, reducing discrimination, and promoting equal rights. For many non-binary people, visibility and affirmation are critical for their mental health, wellbeing, and their sense of belonging.
How you can show your support
Being an ally plays a crucial role in creating inclusive environments, especially in the workplace. Here are practical ways to you can show support to non-binary colleagues:
- Educate yourself and others
Learn about non-binary identities, pronouns, and experiences. Sharing accurate information helps dispel misconceptions and fosters understanding.- Use inclusive language
Ask and use preferred pronouns (they/them for example). Respect individuals’ self-identification and correct yourself if you make a mistake.- Create safe and supportive spaces
Encourage open dialogue, listen actively, and show respect. Create a space where everyone feels comfortable being themselves.- Speak Up and challenge discrimination and bias
Our voice is our strength, so if we see something that doesn’t feel right (i.e. transphobia, misgendering, or discrimination), we should Speak Up. By standing together we promote a culture of respect and inclusion.
International Non-Binary People’s Day serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing gender diversity and fostering environments where everyone can thrive authentically, not just today, but every day.
Whether it’s through education, advocacy, or everyday acts of kindness, each of us has a role to play in building a more inclusive workplace.
