This Saturday 17 May is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), a day which is a significant milestone in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights and is celebrated in over 130 countries.
It’s a pivotal moment in raising awareness about the discrimination and violence faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s decision to remove homosexuality from its International Classification of Diseases in 1990 (yes, you read that right…)
IDAHOBIT not only serves as a reminder of the ongoing battles that LGBTQIA+ individuals face around the world but also emphasises the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This year’s theme is the power of communities, which is apt as inclusion and acceptance is everyone’s responsibility and will only become a reality when we all stand together and do our part.
Be an ally
Here are some ways that you can get involved and help create a better, more inclusive environment:
Educate yourself and take the time to learn about the issues faced by people within the LGBTQIA+ community and understand the significance of IDAHOBIT. Find out more here.
- Show your support and be an ally. This could mean speaking out against discrimination and challenging stereotypes/denial, providing a safe and inclusive space, or simply listening to and supporting your colleagues.
- Consider donating to charities and organisations that support and promote equal rights. These initiatives and services support the wellbeing of those experiencing hardship.
- Celebrate the diversity and richness the LGBTQIA+ community brings to society through sharing stories, achievements and contributions.
Although IDAHOBIT stands as a day of reflection, advocacy, and action against discrimination faced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community, it’s also a reminder that as members of the global community, each of us has a role to play in ensuring inclusion is the norm and just part of our DNA.
By educating ourselves, supporting LGBTQIA+ organisations, and promoting acceptance, we can make significant strides toward equality and understanding. So, let’s embrace the spirit of inclusion – not just on May 17, but every day of the year.
