Our Balinese colleagues recently celebrated Galungan and Kuningan, two important holidays in Bali, celebrating the victory of good over evil and honouring ancestors.
Galungan, celebrated every 210 days according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar, marks the descent of ancestral spirits to Earth, while Kuningan, ten days later, marks their return.
‘Kuningan’ comes from the word ‘kuning’, which means yellow in Balinese. On this special day, which is a day for family gathering, prayers and feasts, offerings often include yellow rice, symbolising prosperity and purity.
“It fills my heart with joy to be able to help the crew to experience their culture in their home away from home. It has been a lovely experience to learn from different nationalities.”
Ana Maria Ramirez Rodriguez, Crew Welfare Officer
Here are a few photos from celebration on Queen Elizabeth and Britannia …
The Rejang dance: This is a sacred Balinese dance to greet the gods as they come down to earth.
Food and prayers: Sharing a meal and praying together are such fundamental ways to connect and celebrate, a way of showing gratitude and beauty.
Decorations: Beautiful display of flowers and well-decorated fruits perfectly captures the visual richness of Balinese ceremonies.
Well done to everyone who worked to recreate the vibrant atmosphere of Kuningan and share their traditions and beliefs with colleagues. By embracing and celebrating these traditions, we create a more inclusive and harmonious environment, no matter where we are in the world.
