Pulse Survey Results: High-Level Findings Across Our Corporation
In June, Carnival Corporation launched the first Pulse Survey to all shipboard and shoreside employees to assess our culture and how it relates to:
- a) our top priority of compliance, environmental protection and the health, safety and well-being of our guests, the people in the places we touch and serve and our employees – both shipboard and shoreside;
- b) the key behaviours that drive excellence and ensure our top priority is consistently exhibited throughout our organisation.
Thank you to all who took the time to complete this important survey, and please note that we’ll continue to use these surveys going forward to help us learn and improve.
While the results of the survey were overall very positive, because this initial Pulse Survey was taken when most of our operations were paused, we know it doesn’t provide a true benchmark. Still, we feel the results of the survey provide some insights that are worth sharing.
High level results from this survey told us that the vast majority of those surveyed agreed that Carnival Corporation is truly committed to its top priority and that company leaders communicate that top priority. Nearly all employees surveyed agreed that their leaders are encouraging Carnival’s culture and behaviours. There is also a high degree of trust that the company tries to do the right thing—in terms of reporting environmental failures to the appropriate authorities.
However, the survey confirmed that many employees believe that our leaders still need to do a better job of communicating about health, safety and well-being. We also learned that we can improve by ensuring our employees can raise concerns without fear of retaliation from leadership and peers. Lastly, the survey results also confirmed that when something goes wrong, some employees feel our leaders need to focus on developing solutions, rather than looking to blame others.
The Plan Moving Forward
We want to continue to improve. To that end, starting next week, our consultants (ECI) will be conducting monthly Mini Pulse Surveys, asking a different small sample of employees every month to offer input. You may be selected to participate in these Mini Pulse Surveys. We’re committed to regularly hearing from you about foundational areas that impact our company—our top priority and our culture. We’ll continue to share the findings with you in the future.
Distinct from the Pulse Surveys, in early November we’ll ask you to participate in a larger, important Culture Survey; Our World, Your Voice, which will be similar to the one that was issued in 2018, and is part of our commitment to the Environmental Compliance Plan.
Again, thank you for your participation.
Sincerely,
Arnold Donald
