At Carnival UK we are passionate about promoting an inclusive culture where our people are skilled at creating and sharing knowledge, are responsible for and own their learning plans that contribute to continuous improvement in performance and behaviours.
We will achieve this ambition by implementing our principles outlined by our Learning and Development team;
- Clear and simple structures and development pathways for managers and individual contributors
- Collaboration and group learning throughout
- Individual ownership of learning plans
- Blended development programmes promoting a 70:20:10 approach
- Inclusion and diversity, leadership at all levels, and self mastery in the programme DNA
- Effective learning management systems, reporting and governance
We recently brought our people from both ship and shore together to step away from the everyday and participate in our ‘Better me, better us’ Learning and Development event.
Led by the Learning Team the purpose of the two-day event was to provide an open and collaborative forum to discuss the future of learning and development activity for leaders, the results of which will help us to sustain and grow a highly skilled, professional and diverse senior management team.
The February event opened with Chris Lodge, Learning Director talking about our ambition and principles. Chris introduced the Leadership Expectations, outlined in the three pillars shown below, which describe the standards expected of our Leaders forming the foundations of ‘The Learning Academy’ which is our road map for the development.
We then moved into animated discussions within facilitated mixed groups focusing on topics such as personal commitment, barriers and drivers and the potential content of the leadership programmes.
The groups also dived into the where, when and how leadership development could be delivered, as well as focusing a lot on personal commitment to learning and how the landscape of learning is changing. Awareness is growing that it’s not just about courses any more, but predominantly it’s the entire learning experience that captures the commitment and engagement of individuals.
The group discussions brought to light the particular need to develop more trust between colleagues and how learning tends to fail when people are not engaged and do not understand the ‘why?’ and ‘what’s in it for me?’ factors.
On day two of the event the groups all met with three potential suppliers to discover how they might work with us, particularly focusing on how we approach our leadership development. With this came the opportunity for some personal development during each workshop, as some of the activities posed by the suppliers included self-coaching and a thought provoking discussion around inclusive leadership.
We have collated lots of information which will help us to support our leaders of the future marking our new approach in this area. We will be following up with those attendees to continue the valuable discussions.
Better me, better us learning and development events will run throughout the remainder of the year. Keep an eye out for more information.
