Today marks Remembrance Day – a moment to reflect on the impact of conflict, and honour those who have served in the Armed Forces, past and present.
More than a historical observance, Remembrance Day is a shared act of respect. It recognises the courage and sacrifice of individuals who have defended freedoms and supported peacekeeping efforts across generations. It also signifies a stand in solidarity with those still affected by conflict today.
Royal Navy veteran Allen Parton alongside his wife Sandra, and Queen Victoria’s Captain, Martyn Sharples, as well as fellow crew members gathered to mark this year’s Remembrance Day during the ship’s visit to Amsterdam.
Captain Sharples last year had the privilege to lead the merchant navy representatives at the festival of remembrance held at the Royal Albert Hall. Today he enthusiastically pulled out all the stops to facilitate a very poignant photoshoot under the iconic funnel of the Cunard Queen Victoria, he even proudly and poignantly wearing his grandad’s and father’s medal. Other crew members who had also served in the armed forces leaped at the opportunity to support the event to assist and enable Allen to mark the moment in a special Cunard way.
Allen said; “I have been truly humbled by the support that captain Sharples and his crew have given to me and Sandra. To see the theatre full of fellow guests and crew members was so inspiring. The message going out to the families of the fallen and those injured in service of our country is that they are not forgotten, nor will they be. From where I sit in the wheelchair it is such a very powerful and much needed message to hear… Salute!”
Remembrance traditions include:
- Two-minute silence: Observed at 11:00 on 11 November, this marks the exact moment the Armistice took effect in 1918, ending hostilities in World War I. First held in the UK in 1919, it’s become a global symbol of remembrance.
- Poppies: Inspired by the flowers that grew on the battlefields of Flanders during World War I, red poppies are worn to honour the fallen. Paper poppies are sold to support veterans’ charities, and wreaths are laid at memorials.
- Services and parades: Ceremonies at cenotaphs and war memorials often feature buglers playing The Last Post and Reveille, with veterans and service members marching in tribute.
As we pause to honour Remembrance Day, let us carry forward the legacy of those who served by fostering understanding, unity, and peace. Whether through quiet reflection or shared remembrance, today is an opportunity to express gratitude and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
