As part of our ongoing commitment to biodiversity and conservation, we’re taking meaningful action to support the restoration of the natural environments that make our destinations so special.

In 2024, we strengthened our biodiversity and conservation goals with a renewed focus to support reforestation and tree planting. This month, crew from both Ventura and Britannia have been bringing this to life by rolling up their sleeves to support tree planting projects in Madeira, Portugal.

Together, our teams of volunteers planted approximately 250 trees of endemic Madeira species at a site 500 meters above sea level in the hills east of Funchal. The initiative was delivered in partnership with our port agent Blandy Travel & Shipping and the local government institution IFCN (Nature and Forest Conservation Institute), who will continue to care for the site by watering the trees, maintaining the area, and removing invasive species.

This initiative not only supports our sustainability strategy but also contributes meaningfully to the preservation of Madeira’s natural heritage.

Team Ventura

Sam Hunt, Environmental Officer on Ventura, said:

“It was fantastic to see crew from all departments come together for a great day in the mountains of Funchal. Team Ventura managed to plant 100 trees – each one a small contribution to Madeira’s natural environment, helping promote P&O Cruises’ commitment to sustainability.”

Team Britannia

Captain Patrick Maguire on Britannia said:

“As Britannia sails the world’s oceans, we’re committed to giving back to the communities that welcome us. Through our tree planting initiative, we’re growing roots of sustainability, one destination at a time. Planting trees is more than an environmental act – it’s a promise to future generations.”

Sophie Portlock, Vice President of Sustainability, said:

Our crew’s commitment to planting trees in Madeira is a powerful example of how strategic volunteerism can safeguard natural heritage, promote community benefits and engagement, and nurture the foundation for truly sustainable tourism.

Their actions today shape a resilient and thriving future for all. Thank you to our crew and partners for making these vital partnerships possible.”
