Our ships sail the world’s incredible oceans, and we’re committed to our responsibility to help preserve and protect our marine environment. One of the ways we do this is by giving back to our local communities and the destinations we visit through our programme of beach cleans.
Most recently, colleagues from Iona took part in a beach clean in Norway, and colleagues from Queen Victoria got involved with a beach clean in Madeira. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time.
Iona in Norway
Iona’s latest beach clean took part in Olden and was organised with Nordfjord Port Authority and the local community. This meant that alongside the 85 crew members from Iona, over 140 people from the local area also volunteered their time. In fact, so many people joined we had to extend the area we were cleaning, which is a real sign of success!
The team collected a huge amount of rubbish, filling a 10m3 container. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a gathering in the cruise park where children from the local school sang songs and the local Women’s Association served hot dogs to all the volunteers.
Crew members Gisela, Emily and Al mentioned how great it felt to be able to contribute.
Queen Victoria in Madeira
16 crew members from Queen Victoria joined the beach clean in Madeira, working closely with the port agent. The team cleared a significant amount of rubbish, including a lot of plastic and other items that had been left after a party the night before.
Queen Victoria’s Environmental Officer said: “The beach clean was well organised and definitely had a positive impact with the local community. Everyone who took part really enjoyed it”.
Well done Team Iona and Team Queen Victoria! We have more beach cleans coming up across the fleet this year, so keep a look out and get involved.
