Today is International Day for Women in Maritime, a significant event dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in the maritime industry and promoting gender equality within this traditionally male-dominated field.
Integrating women into the maritime industry brings numerous benefits. Gender diversity leads to greater innovation and improved safety standards, and women in maritime roles can expect job security, career growth, and the opportunity to work in a dynamic and essential global industry.
We have many women in maritime roles on our ships, however women are still underrepresented across the fleet. As these patterns are seen across the industry, they require a long-term strategy to address them. Alongside our work to attract diverse talent to our ships, initiatives like International Day for Women in Maritime inspire more women to pursue maritime careers, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment.
This week in Southampton, Carnival UK will be hosting an inspiring event in partnership with WISTA UK (Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association) and CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) to honour the contributions of women in maritime and discuss the future of women in the industry. The event will be recorded and shared onboard, so be sure to keep a look out. Plus, check out our Women Officer Network and women’s seafarer groups on board to find out about the work they do and how you can get involved.
The importance of male allyship and advocacy cannot be overstated in our journey to increase female representation in maritime. It’s not just about having more women at the table – it’s about creating an environment where everyone’s voices are valued and heard. Together, we can build a more inclusive industry.
