Today we recognise the beginning of Ramadan for many colleagues, ship and shore.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting during the hours of day light, prayer, reflection and community. It’s the holiest month for Muslims, marking the time when the Qur’an, the holy book, was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (over 1400 years ago!) and is believed that the rewards of good deeds are multiplied many times over during this sacred month.

A time for self-reflection, moral conditioning and spiritual advancement, Ramadan brings an opportunity for Muslims to hit the reset button; evaluating and adjusting their behaviours and attitudes in line with the person they want to become. This is in the hopes that the good behaviours practised during the month go on to be lifelong habits.

Did you know that the exact dates of Ramadan vary each year due to the Islamic calendar being based on the cycles of the moon? This year in the UK it’s expected to begin the evening of Friday 28 February and last until Sunday 30 March where the month-long fasting will be ended with a huge feast and celebrations called Eid Al-Fitr.

5 ways you can support colleagues observing Ramadan:

Be mindful of mealtimes
Try to schedule meetings or social events earlier in the day when they’ve recently eaten Suhoor (the pre-fasting meal right before sunrise), or later in the day after Iftar (the meal eaten after sunset.)

Respect privacy
Not everyone takes part in fasting during Ramadan for various reasons and it’s important we respect their choices and not make assumptions.

Be flexible with schedules where possible
Colleagues may be flexing their working hours to accommodate Ramadan. Some may also need to take time out of their working day to pray.

Be considerate with food and drink
It’s ok to eat and drink around those who are fasting, but try not to do so in a way that could be distracting or insensitive.

Create a supportive environment
Check in with your Muslim colleagues to see how they’re doing during Ramadan. You could take this time to educate yourself and ask questions to your colleagues (as long as they’re ok with this) or learn Ramadan greetings like Ramadan Mubarak (blessed Ramadan) or Ramadan Kareem (generous Ramadan).
