Rachel, Crew Services Manager on board Queen Mary 2 gives us an insight on how our Fleet colleagues are keeping fit.
Find something you enjoy
We all have a tendency to over indulge over the Festive period, and January brings an influx of keep fit regimes, detox diets and ‘new year, new me’ resolutions.
Things are no different here on Queen Mary 2. Our Crew Wellness theme for January has been all about healthy living, and our knowledgeable team of Medics gave us some handy tips for maintaining a good diet, exercise and sufficient sleep in order to improve our general wellbeing.
Our crew has been making good use of the extra space on board for a variety of different fitness activities. As we all know, when it comes to exercise it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ scenario and it’s important to find something you enjoy in order to keep up with the routine.
Cardio Boxing
The Hotel girls have been levelling the playing field by practising some cardio boxing exercises. A variety of punching combos mixed with squats, lunges and bunny hops gives a great full body workout and increases the heart rate to burn off some of those December calories.
Yoga
Some of us prefer a more relaxed approach to their physical exercise. Yoga is a great way to challenge the body and look after your mental wellbeing. By practising regularly you’ll see an improvement in posture, core strength and flexibility. It’s a fantastic way to start the day or to offload stress.
Dr Gerry is our yoga enthusiast on board and has been giving demonstrations during our Crew Wellness coffee mornings as well as holding classes by the Pavilion pool. Once the weather gets a little warmer, we hope to move these sessions outside for a bit of sunrise/sunset yoga. Namaste!
Walking and jogging
The Promenade Deck is a crew favourite for stretching the legs and taking in some of the fresh sea air we’ve become so accustomed to. Despite being winter, the Devonshire coast has treated us to some crisp, sunny days and our avid runners are certainly making the most of it.
Whether it’s a brisk walk, light jog or practising for a marathon, Queen Mary 2’s impressive promenade deck has long been one of the ship’s highlights and our deck crew has been working hard to keep it in top condition for when our Guests return. Until then, it’s a great source of ‘Vitamin Sea’ for our crew members.
Golf
Just because we can’t get on land, doesn’t mean we can’t play a spot of golf from time to time. The Fairways on Deck 12 are being kept in regular use for our golfers to get some swing practice in. Could we be producing the next Tiger Woods?
Basketball
Basketball is a popular sport amongst our Filipino colleagues and now with the basketball net on Deck 13, they can practice their shooting and dribbling skills. Looking ahead to spring, the Ships Welfare Committee (SWC) will be holding some basketball shootout tournaments in the spirit of some good healthy competition and some prizes to be won!
Gym
For the body conscious, the gym is currently open 24/7 and has a variety of equipment to meet cardio and weightlifting needs. As you can see in the pictures, members of the Galley team are making use of their much deserved free time to keep active.
In cabin Fitness
If you like to sweat it out in the privacy of your own cabins, there are plenty of options. The crew exercise channel has several HIIT, stretch and aerobic workouts on repeat and the SWC also has a variety of DVDs to be borrowed from popular health and fitness icons.
Lasting change
With all this to choose from there really is no stopping us. We have options to fit with all of our work schedules and are certainly making the most of the excellent spaces on board Queen Mary 2. The keep fit regimes are set to last well beyond January and the SWC are looking to hold a crew sports day in the spring with some old school fun and games. Egg and spoon race anyone?
Next week we will hear from Queen Elizabeth!
