Iona ended 2020 with a new focus for 2021 – recognition for the contributions made to promoting environmental culture throughout the ship and they’ve done just that by award four ECP coins who’ve gone above and beyond in protecting the environment.

They want to recognise individual contributions, no matter the size. Demonstrating these actions not only helps to achieve the requirements of the Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP) but also to form the bedrock for an environmental culture well beyond.

Four worthy crew members received their ECP coins from Captain Wesley Dunlop in recognition of their contribution. Congratulations to…

Kamran Qamar, Seaman 1 who found, and removed, broken glass from a Guest balcony. He informed his line manager and then continued to remove scupper covers and grills on Guest balconies, cleaned them out and replaced the covers. When asked why he did this he replied; “the rubbish should not have been in the scuppers and it’s the right thing to do”. Well done Kamran for demonstrating the environmental culture we’re striving to promote, doing it because it’s the right thing to do!

Romeo Orcemena, Senior Tech Rating who’s been going through the bins in the machinery spaces, collecting rags that appear not to have been used, or used just once, and washing them. He stated many times crew grab a rag ‘just in case’ and then throw it in the bin – it’s a waste of money and we run out of rags. Well done Romeo for demonstrating the importance of recycling and reusing materials.

Anurag Barun Storekeeper  who assisted the Environmental Officer to conduct the DER-2005 scupper and filtration survey onboard. Anurag was instrumental in locating/sizing and recording scuppers in the Hotel Department and passing the information onto his fellow storekeepers to help prevent waste from entering the drains in the storing areas.

Michael Torreliza SECP who volunteered to assist the Environmental Officer with an onboard project.  Michael was more than happy to help and do his bit to help protect the environment.

Congratulations to all those recognised with an ECP coin, and to Iona for helping to lead the way on promoting the right environmental culture.
