Richard Diaz, a Wiper, started on board Queen Mary 2 in 2019 and joined the ship for his current contract in April when the ship returned to Southampton from her cancelled Round World Voyage.

As Wiper, Richard is part of the Technical Department. This is his ‘A Day in the Life of…’
7:00 to 07:30 The day starts by doing a temperature check in the Engine workshop with all my colleagues, from there I go to breakfast in Kings Court.
8:00 to 10:00 I work in Technical Stores helping the Technical Stores Manager with issuing orders and preparing landings which will be offloaded from the ship.

After storing days in Southampton I produce the stock items labels, put them on the items, then stow them on the appropriate shelves within the various storerooms and cages onboard.
10:00 to 10:15 Morning break – face timing with my family!
10:15 to 12:00 I work with the other Wipers in the engine room; cleaning and painting or other jobs as assigned by the First Engineer.
12:00 to 13:30 Lunch break
13:30 to 18:00 During the afternoon I’ve been allocated to work with the team of the HVAC Department. HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
My duties during this period consist of carrying out the cleaning, sanitising and changing of filters on the Air Handling units and cabin fan coils that we have onboard. I also report any defects with the units or the AC Rooms that require repairs, helping to carry out this work if required.
18:30 Dinner and end of working day; I return to my cabin to get changed into my sports gear and go to the gym, or I take a hot shower and watch a movie. I also Facetime with my family and then go to bed.
At the end of November Richard will return to his family in the Philippines.
Come back next week for an update on Wellbeing on board.
