You may remember that back in October we said goodbye to all the single use cups around the building to help us become more sustainable – well, we weren’t finished there. Our aim is to remove all single use plastics from the Atrium Café by March next year!

It might surprise you to learn that in Carnival House we use around 41,000 disposable knives, forks and spoons a year, as well as 26,000 packets of condiments. That doesn’t sound very sustainable to us. That’s why from today (6 December) we’ll be removing all disposable cutlery as well as the plastic condiment packets.

What does this mean for you?

Of course, we’re not expecting you to eat everything with your hands. We’ll be replacing the cutlery with reusable, metal versions. All you’ll have to do with them when you’re finished is pass them back with your dishes in the Atrium or drop them in to the designated pots in each breakout area by the end of the working day. The designated pots will be removed each evening and returned to the Atrium Café for cleaning.

And instead of picking up packets of condiments which just end up in the bin, we’ll have refillable pumps for our most popular sauces for you to use.

Get involved in our sustainable revolution…

We’re also looking at how we can replace the single use containers we use for a lot of our food. We want your help in deciding what our best options are. We’re therefore looking for a group of volunteers to come and help us do some testing – if you want to become one of our proud ecowarriors and help make a difference simply give us your details in the form below.

And don’t forget if you have any bright ideas make sure you share them at our HESS feedback stations.
