Have you noticed the new carpets fitted around Carnival House? Not only do these carpets look great, they are also one of the most environmentally friendly carpets on the market. As part of facilities office improvements, 1551m2 of carbon neutral carpets have been fitted across Carnival House. This results in the retirement 16 tons of CO2, the equivalent emissions of a car travelling 62,992km!
The new carpets were designed with biofilia in mind. By incorporating features of nature into a built environment, it has been suggested through research, that it can reduce stress, blood pressure and heart rates, whilst increasing productivity, creativity and self reported rates of well-being.
The original carpets in Carnival House were fitted when the building was first built, over 10 years ago, by a company called Interface. 10 years later, Interface has delivered us with fantastic new carpets once again. Interface have continued to lead the way in sustainable flooring options and as part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and the environment, it was important to use a flooring supplier that would match our values.
The old Carnival House carpets have not gone into landfill like 165,000 tonnes do each year (source: www.greenspec.co.uk) instead Interface have a programme called ReEntry where they use a variety of social enterprises to find new homes for carpet, this could include pulling it apart to make new carpets or reusing it. The facilities team chose to use ReEntry to dispose of the old carpets meaning we have diverted 1452m2 of carpet from landfill!
Every flooring product we buy from Interface is carbon neutral. Their reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of their plants makes them the lowest polluter in the flooring industry. Anything they can’t avoid they offset by promoting renewable energy, protecting habitats and improving lives of communities. Examples of the support they have provided are reforestation projects in the US, Cambodia and Zimbabwe and community fuel switching.
The environmentally friendly carpet solution has seen us awarded with certificates from Interface’s President and CEO which can be found on the wall in the conference suite.
