Did you know that it’s estimated that 1 in 20 people in the UK have South Asian heritage, and almost 22% of crew onboard our ships do too? Today marks the beginning of South Asian Heritage Month a vital and vibrant celebration that recognises the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of people from the South Asian region – including countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

This year’s theme is Roots to Routes; exploring the rich journey of growth, and the evolving connections made through generations. The contributions are woven into the fabric of many societies and South Asian Heritage Month serves as an opportunity to honour the diverse heritage of over a billion people worldwide and highlight the profound impact they’ve had.

Here are a few examples:

  • Science and medicine: Vikram Sarabhai pioneered India’s space program, and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inspired millions as a scientist and President of India.
  • Politics and leadership: Leaders like Indira Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi have played pivotal roles in shaping national histories.
  • Arts and culture: Bollywood cinema, classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam, and traditional music have gained global popularity.
  • Business and innovation: Entrepreneurs like Sundar Pichai (Google), Indra Nooyi (PepsiCo) and Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft) exemplify South Asian talent in the corporate world.
  • Community and activism: South Asian communities have been at the forefront of social justice, advocating for equality, education, and health initiatives. A name you might know is Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for female education and Nobel Peace Prize Winner.
  • Spices, ingredients and global dishes: South Asian spices like turmeric, cumin and coriander are used in cuisines worldwide and dishes like tikka masala, (originally a British adaption of Indian flavours) are now widely enjoyed.
  • Wellbeing and spiritual practices: Yoga and meditation, originating in South Asian, have gained immense popularity globally for their physical and mental health benefits.

Whether you’re celebrating your South Asian heritage or just taking the opportunity to learn more about each other, we wish you a Happy South Asian Heritage Month!
