Living our Culture Essentials every day, as well as our focus on how we do things, is so incredibly important because it’s the ‘how’ that will help us reach our long term goals and aspirations.
In 2021 a number of people were specifically highlighted in our Culture Essentials Awards throughout the year, with individuals and teams identified as our quarterly winners, and subsequently our 2021 Winners of the Year nominees.
You’ve been busy voting and we’re delighted to announce that our winners are…
2021 Individual Winner: Richard Robertson, Maritime
The care Richard showed to respect and protect our Princess colleagues while supporting them during an unplanned quarantine stay in the UK was tremendous, and truly exemplifies what it means to live and breathe our Culture Essentials.
“Due to medical reasons, Sky Princess had to disembark eight crew members into hotel quarantine late on a Friday. Rich was on call over the weekend and discovered that the crew members didn’t have the facilities they needed. With Princess only having the capacity to provide Care to guests in the UK, Rich took it upon himself to contact all the crew members via a WhatsApp group and asked them what they required. He then went out on the Saturday and made care packages for each crew member; including snacks, drinks, medication, reading materials and more.
He continued to do this for the crew during their ten days quarantine at the hotel, and contacted relevant people at Princess to ensure the crew had contact and care 24/7 during this time. He really went the extra mile for these crew members, speaking up and respecting and protecting them when they were in need. He also communicated the learnings from this to ensure we can improve in the future. Well done Rich!”
Well done Richard! We hope you enjoy your prize – a cruise for up to 14 nights in a balcony cabin for yourself and a guest. Time for a well-deserved holiday!
2021 Team Winner: Crew charter welcome volunteers
Made up of colleagues from teams across the business, ship and shore, this exceptional group of people really went the extra mile to respect and protect our crew during a very challenging time of ever-changing COVID-19 travel restrictions and quarantine protocols.
The care they showed to step up and support our crew arriving on charter flights from India is incredible – a fantastic example of living and breathing our Culture Essentials.
Respect & Protect
“The team of people that stepped up to support our colleagues arriving on charter flights from India deserve some special recognition. At very short notice, these colleagues agreed to spend time in the terminal ensuring that colleagues arriving on the charter flights from India were refreshed and could embark safely and in compliance with the strict COVID-19 protocols that are now in place. This involved stepping out of their comfort zone to perform unfamiliar tasks. Thank you to all of you – a tremendous effort which made a real difference to our people.”
Well done Cristina Sburlea, Di Yang, Hannah Cross, Jenny Fortune, Kasia Waters, Katrina Flynn, Keren Taylor, Lisa Draper, Liz Sinclair, Maria Soneira Perez, Michelle Bird, Michelle Harradence, Anna Thomas, John White, Carrie Phillips, Rachel Wallis, Tom Driscoll, Kate Atterbury, Emma Elrick, Karen Lax, Tracy Edwards, Michaela Pearson, Craig Baker and Sarah Parker. We hope you enjoy your prize of a special team event worth up to £5,000!

A core part of the return to service programme, colleagues agree that “Donna has been working tirelessly to facilitate all of the attendances to ships needed to deliver return to service and maintain compliance. She is always here for us to support the On Company Service ship visits so all contractors can join the vessels from the UK and Europe. It is a huge task to complete for nine vessels however Donna makes things happen!”
An indispensable member of the team, Donna is brilliantly living our Culture Essentials and ensuring a successful return to service.
Vicky Burns, eCommerce Manager - Cunard
Speak up, Respect and Protect, Improve, Communicate, Listen and Learn
Recognised by her colleagues for living and breathing our Culture Essentials, “Vicky stepped in as Acting Digital Content Manager on short notice and has made a brilliant job of it.
She always makes it a priority to speak up and empower the team, helping us to develop ourselves and support our career goals, as well as providing innovative solutions to benefit the business. A constant source of support, she is always willing to listen and help with any problem and is a truly excellent manager who really cares and always respects and protects her team.”
Vicky said: "I felt extremely surprised, happy and grateful for winning the Q3 Culture Essentials award. We have all worked so hard this year and I wouldn’t have been able to achieve half as much without the hard work, support and determination of the rest of the team."
Emma Hawkins, CCO Team Leader - Shared Services
Improve, Communicate, Listen and Learn
Recognised by her colleagues for her outstanding contribution to the Contact Centre, “it’s hard to express the value Emma has added as there have been so many things that she has done to benefit individuals, the department and the brands.”
Emma was nominated for so many brilliant examples of living our Culture Essentials, here are just a couple: “We have recruited internally only for our Team Leader positions and transitioning from a Personal Cruise Advisor to a Team Leader can be a very daunting task, however Emma stepped up to support our new recruits by asking to become their mentor. She has guided, coached, trained and empowered them to have the confidence to make the right decisions and support their teams in the best possible way.
She also worked with Employee Relations and Learning & Development to create a Team Leader development workshop programme to help others develop and become Team Leaders in the future. The feedback so far from attendees on the workshops has been incredibly positive and I’m so proud of Emma for making this happen.”
P&O Cruises Brochure Team - P&O Cruises
Improve, Communicate, Listen and Learn
The P&O Cruises brochure team were recognised for their collaboration, both as a tight-knit team and with their key stakeholders, to produce the most recent, and “Best Yet!” P&O Cruises brochure. Experts at Communication, they kept everyone updated throughout the project, Speaking Up and consistently challenging where appropriate, both professionally and with all channel considerations in mind as one single voice.
“Managing a piece of communication as large as a 200 page brochure is always an incredibly tricky task. This year the team have excelled themselves. Not only have they sought to drive improvements year on year (delivering quite possibly our most impactful and engaging brochure yet), but they dealt impeccably with a substantial last minute change which fundamentally changed the Grand Tours section of the brochure. Through superlative stakeholder engagement, a solution driven response and clear communication, the team turned around this change in break-neck time, despite additional challenges of home schooling and print deadlines. I am so proud of what they have achieved and the team spirit through which they have achieved it.”
Team members: Abi Winfield, Angela Wade, Kirsty Everett, Heaven White, Mark Aquilina and Lyn Roberts.
ARC Project Team - Maritime
Speak up, Improve, Communicate, Listen and Learn
The ARC project team worked tirelessly to successfully launch the ARC tool to the whole business by the deadline.
“Jason – For stepping in and not only completing the build of the ARC tool when the main developer left the business, but taking steps to make improvements when listening to the needs of users and going well above and beyond his role. Faye – For maintaining a positive attitude throughout the project, speaking up when necessary to ensure both ship and shore continued to have what they need to manage through the pause and for the transition into a new way of working for ship and shore. Donna – For maintaining an excellent service to Maritime and wider business colleagues and vendors whilst engaging fully with the project, and speaking up and to ensure all the service needs would continue to be met in the tool. Jess – For stepping up to successfully lead the project and ensuring that the tool launch completed on time for the business.”
Team members: Jason Milburn, Faye Brimson, Donna Molloy, Jessica Bull
Entertainments Family - P&O Cruises
Speak up, Respect & Protect, Improve, Communicate
Recognised for delivering an incredible launch for Iona, “the Entertainments Family, including many teams and individuals from both brands, faced unprecedented challenges, but at no point did anyone lose focus on the goal to deliver extraordinary holidays to our guests.”
“Regardless of team or brand, everyone worked together to step up and get the job done and there were countless examples of our Culture Essentials being brought to life. From speaking up to resolve concerns, to communicating changes so we could all move forward together, everyone went above and beyond. We had team members driving parts and props to the ship over weekends, last minute travel on board, long rehearsals and we even asked partners at home to bring emergency deliveries to the docks!
It’s due to this team of people that we managed to deliver the Shakedown we did and go into the Maiden Cruise with a positive step forward. It’s incredibly easy for us to ask the team to deliver our vision… but they are the ones that took a challenging situation and improved it, with no complaints.”
Team members: Deborah Hammond, Jessica Paull, Joanna Gould, Clare Wiggins, Clare Ellams, Adam Jenkins, Mark Price, Jodie Freeman, Danielle Grant, Sam Motley, Damian Jackson, Roxanna Shirley, Daniel Webb, Daniel Mallinder, Jodi Lynch, Flavio Diolaiti, Susie Maycock, Tom Driscoll, Dave Desmond, Chris Knowles, Casey Caldwell, Gustav Patrick, Emma Alexander, Nick Cosslett, Andy Jones, Jane Edwards, Luigi Locorotondo, Sarah Delooze, Simon Brookes, Zoe Miles, Jackie Le, Phil Yeomans and Annie Barber.

Improve, Empower

During these challenging times, the team have pulled together, working tirelessly to improve response times for our brand, empowering other teams within the business to run successful campaigns to encourage newcomers and past guests to book their next holiday with us, which without their support would not have been possible.”
