Through our Culture Essentials, we’re all committed to working together to make a positive impact to our culture; operating with integrity, trust and respect for each other, protecting our people and the places we touch.

This is particularly key for our sustainability goals, so we caught up with Sophie Portlock, Vice President of Sustainability, to find out more:

“My role at Carnival UK is to work with the business to develop and deliver our sustainability agenda and supporting activities. I passionately believe that sustainable development is vital for our future. It’s about taking committed action to look after today and tomorrow and doing the right things for society and the environment, whilst enhancing business performance and supporting the long-term interests of the company.

Our Culture Essentials are fundamental to the successful delivery of this. Individually they’re important and can be powerful, but together they form the foundation of our working behaviours and practices. I work with colleagues across all departments in Carnival UK and across the Corporation, so having a common set of behaviours we all follow is really important to help build strong relationships.

Working together to shape a future we can all be proud of, we’re committed to delivering a positive environmental and social impact across the breadth of our operations. We’re already doing a number of good things to drive this, including:

  • Setting a pathway to decarbonisation through significant investment in carbon efficient technologies and initiatives, improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions.
  • Initiatives to reduce and eliminate non-essential single use plastics, preserve water and minimise food wastage.
  • Working with our suppliers to source seafood from sustainable sources.
  • Continually striving to promote sustainable tourism by working with our communities, local governments, trade associations and tourism organisations.
  • Ongoing investment in our commitment to respect and protect the health, safety, wellbeing and security of our colleagues, guests and all others working on our behalf.
  • Recognising the value and importance of diversity, equity and inclusion and continuing to build a positive work environment to empower our colleagues.

And we’re not stopping there. Our sustainability journey is ongoing and it’s one we’re committed to. We’re continually looking for new ways to leave a positive impact and we will be sharing more on this in the coming months.”

How are our Culture Essentials helping you lead the way in driving a positive impact to our culture? We’d love to hear your stories! Please email us if you’d like to take part and feature on The Insider.
